Sebastian Matthew Berhalter (born May 10, 2001) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the United States national team.
Early life and college
[edit | edit source]Sebastian Matthew Berhalter was born in London to Rosalind and Gregg Berhalter, who at the time was a professional soccer player for Crystal Palace. Sebastian Berhalter was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Between 2012 and 2013, he played youth soccer with Swedish club Hammarby IF when his father managed their senior team.[3]
He joined the Columbus Crew youth academy[4] in 2014, climbing the ranks and making 103 appearances and scoring 11 goals. In 2019, Berhalter played college soccer for the Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina, playing in 16 matches.[5][6]
Club career

[edit | edit source]Berhalter was announced as a homegrown player signing by the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer on January 17, 2020.[5] He made his professional debut on July 11, 2020, against FC Cincinnati during the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Florida.[7] Berhalter made nine appearances for the Crew during the 2020 season, which ended in their MLS Cup victory.[8]
Austin FC (loan)
[edit | edit source]On March 3, 2021, Berhalter joined Major League Soccer club Austin FC on loan for the 2021 season.[9] He made his debut for the club on April 24 against the Colorado Rapids, coming on as a substitute in the 3–1 away victory.[10] Following the 2021 season, Berhalter's contract option was declined by Austin and he returned to Columbus.[11]
Vancouver Whitecaps FC
[edit | edit source]On February 4, 2022, Berhalter was traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for $50,000 in general allocation money and an additional $50,000 should certain conditions be met.[12]
During the 2023 season, he made 37 appearances for the Whitecaps and scored two goals across all competitions.[8]
During the 2024 season, he made 45 appearances, had 6 assists[13], and scored three goals across all competitions.[14]
During the 2025 season, Berhalter played 33 games and scored four goals. He became the top ranked player on his team for assists with 12 assists during the season.[15] Additionally, Berhalter appeared the in 2025 MLS All-Star Game against the LIGA MX All-Stars team on July 23, 2025, which MLS won 3-1.[16]
International career
[edit | edit source]On May 22, 2025, Berhalter was called up by United States national team coach Mauricio Pochettino for training camp in Chicago ahead of matches against Turkey and Switzerland.[17] He made his debut in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.[18] He scored his first goal for the national team during the U.S.' 5–1 thumping of Uruguay at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.[19][20][21]
Personal life
[edit | edit source]He is the son of current Chicago Fire FC and former United States national team head coach Gregg Berhalter[22] and former University of North Carolina Tar Heels player Rosalind "Roz" Berhalter, who won four national championships.[23][24]
