NEW: a wiki-tech working group will be meeting during the monthly meetup. Join us if you are a developer wanting to improve wiki projects, or an existing technical contributor. What is the meetup like? We organize regular presentations, social times and working groups on themes common to our members. Current working groups include: [1] technical contributions; [2] Humanities and Wikimedia projects and [3] Wikidata x Maps ; [4] Bay Area topics.

History

[edit source]

Bay Area wiki enthusiasts have been gathering since at least 2007. There is a solid community of contributors around here; maybe related to the proximity of Silicon Valley and all the tech-focused creativity that brings; the rich non-profit presence in the area; and the presence, since 2008, of the Wikimedia Foundation's global headquarters. The MediaWiki Group San Francisco was active from 2012–2013 and now defunct, and Wikipedia Tech last held a Meetup event in 2018. The Bay Area WikiSalon series initially took place on the last Wednesday evening of every other month at the Wikimedia Foundation's Chip Deubner Lounge in downtown San Francisco (from 2016 to 2019), and has since been revived in other forms.

The organizers of the current meetups have been organizing meetings since ____. An officially recognized Bay Area Wikipedians User Group was proposed in 2024.[needs update]
