History

[edit | edit source]

The William Chick Scarritt House was designed in 1888 by John Wellborn Root in a Châteauesque style.[1] It was built for lawyer William Chick Scarritt,[2] grandson of William Miles Chick, son of Nathan Scarritt, and father of Dorothy McKibbin.[3] William served as the police commissioner of Kansas City from 1896 to 1897, and president of the Board of Park Commissioners in 1922.[4]

It served as a nursing home from the 1940s to the 2000s.[2]

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 21, 1976.[5] It was added to the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 1983.[2]

The house went under renovations in 2012. In the morning of September 12, 2016, the house caught fire.[6][7][8][9] In 2017, neighbors of the mansion helped rebuild it.[10]

The house is 2 stories with a basement. It was built with a limestone foundation, brownstone walls, and features a hip roof.[5][7]
