Whoppah is a Dutch online marketplace for second-hand design furniture, art, lighting and home accessories.[1][2] Launched in 2019 and headquartered in Amsterdam, the platform operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France.[3][4] Items listed on Whoppah are reviewed by staff for quality and authenticity before publication.[5][6]

Whoppah adopted a curated model that distinguishes it from more traditional classifieds sites such as Marktplaats.nl.[7][5]

History

[edit | edit source]

Whoppah was founded in May 2019 in Amsterdam by Thomas Bunnik and Evelien Remmelts.[1][2] Bunnik had previously co-founded the fintech company Pritle, which was acquired by BinckBank in 2017.

The platform launched with vetted listings and insured shipping.[7][2] Turnover grew faster in 2020, aided by increased demand for second-hand home furnishings during the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] The company opened to sellers in Belgium the same year and entered the German market in 2023.[4]

In 2024, Whoppah expanded into France and acquired the French vintage-furniture platform Design Market.[8][3] In October 2025 it purchased the Dutch showroom-furniture site Showroommodellen.nl.[9]

Operations

[edit | edit source]

Whoppah operates as a mixed consumer-to-consumer (C2C) and business-to-consumer (B2C) marketplace. Private individuals and professional sellers, including vintage dealers, galleries and interior shops, offer items for sale. Staff check photographs and descriptions for authenticity and condition before listings go live. The platform provides insured shipping and payment processing.[5][4][7]

Funding

[edit | edit source]

Whoppah has raised funding from angel investors.[7] The company has faced challenges in raising growth capital amid broader market conditions.[10]
