Version: none (Master Table)
[edit source]This template is the home of the default data structure for Video Game releases used by the Module:VgData. This page includes the templating for the video game chart used for Genres
For example, the code {{#invoke:VgData|main|ct=genre|ver=RPG|all=true}} will output the following table:
| Action RPG | Action role-playing game | DCCG | Digital collectible card game | Dungeon crawl | Dungeon crawl |
| Eroge | Japanese erotic video games | FPS | First-person shooter | JRPG | Japanese-style role-playing game |
| MMORPG | Massively multiplayer online RPG | Monster tamer | Monster-taming game | MUD | Multi-user dungeon |

| Sandbox | Sandbox game | Soulslike | Soulslike | Tactical RPG | Tactical role-playing game |
| Turn-based | Turn-based game | Virtual pet | Pet-raising simulation |
How This Template Works
[edit source]Parameters
[edit source]Each parameter must be pipe-separated, and should be listed immediately after {{#invoke:VgData|main|}}. Each parameter is in parameter=value notation. The following supported parameters are used by this template:
ct: This is used to select the type of table you want to create. This element will always begenrefor this table typever: This element is used to select the specific table version you want to pull data from. This list should be added to as new table types are made. Below is the current list of all available types:none: This is the default option you should use for custom tables. In this case, the table will select elements from the Master Terms table.Adventure: This option sets the Module to pull from the Adventure table type.RPG: This option sets the Module to pull from the RPG table type.Simulator: This option sets the Module to pull from the Simulator table typeStrategy: This option sets the Module to pull from the Strategy table type
all: This element is used to tell the module to output all available elements to this table type. If left off, you have to manually specify which terms you want included in the tablecol: This sets the number of column-pairs you want the table to use (setting this number to 3 will create a 4 column table). If not included, this value defaults to 3
Terms
[edit source]After all the parameters come the specific input terms you want to add to the table. The genre table type is the most complex of the 3 table types, as the specific terms depend on the ver of the table selected. Each term must be pipe-separated, and should have the exact spelling, capitalization, and punctuation to ensure the module outputs correctly. All input terms can be seen in the tables at the top of the page. Each table lists the specific data available for each selected ver of the table
Page Usage Guidelines
[edit source]The purpose of this template is to limit the large number of wikilinks on Video Game pages related to Video Game Genres, as well as to create a unified location to add / modify video game genre Terms. As such, there are some specific usage notes on how to use this template on pages
- Template Location: The template should always be placed near the top of the page it's added to. In cases where the template is used in multiple areas on the page, or multiple VgData templates are used on the same page, a
==Legend==section should be added to clearly delineate these templates from the rest of the page. - Wikilinks: Any time a Term is used on the page outside the template, that Term should NOT be a wikilink. The template exists to condense the number of wikilinks needed on the page, especially on List pages, so only use a wikilink for Terms not on the template.
- Only Use What's Necessary: Many video game pages span a wide variety of genres and sub-genres. As such, this template can get very bulky on pages containing a large number of games. To try and limit template bloat, it's recommended to only add Terms to the template if that Term is used repeatedly on your page. In other words, feel free to leave a Term off for your page if it's used once or twice.
- Consistency: In cases where you leave off a Term, this term should be used in a wikilink. Preferably use the same wikilink that this template would use in these cases
Term Variants
[edit source]In general, most platform Terms do not have any additional notes added to them. But in some cases, notes can be used to add distinction to a particular genre without needing to add a new Term. Below are all of the current examples of this:
Shoot 'em upgames have several variants based on the shooting type: Shoot 'em up (fixed), Shoot 'em up (tube), Shoot 'em up (rail), and Shoot 'em up (twin-stick).- For games listed as "Top-down shooters" or "Multidirectional shooters", these should be listed as simply Shoot 'em up
Deck buildinggames have a special variant for roguelike versions: Deck building (rougelike)Scrolling shootergames have variants based on scroll direction: Scrolling shooter (vertical), Scrolling shooter (horizontal), or Scrolling shooter (isometric).Racinggames have a few variants: Racing (sim), Racing (kart), and Racing (arcade)Vehicle simvariants indicate the vehicle type of the game. Some examples are: Vehicle sim (plane), Vehicle sim (boat), Vehicle sim (spaceship), Vehicle sim (submarine), etc- These variants are also used for
Vehicular combatgames. If the same game usesVehicle simandVehicular combat, the vehicle is generally only listed onVehicle sim, not both terms.
- These variants are also used for
Horrorgame variants indicate the type of horror. Currently, the only one in use is Horror (psych)Sportsgame variants indicate the specific game being played. Some examples are: Sports (basketball), Sports (football), Sports (soccer), Sports (hockey), etc
Note: For this template, we default to using "football" for American Football, and "soccer" for Association Football. This is done solely to add clarity that these 2 games are not the same sport. While this is known to be a point of contention among sports fans, we request that games listed with (soccer) NOT be changed to (football).
