Template:Press/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This template should be used for press sources which mention a Wikipedia page, as it will link the article's talk page to Wikipedia:Press coverage.

This template automatically adds articles to Category:Wikipedia pages referenced by the press. Oftentimes, the purpose of this is to contextualize talk page discussions about ongoing coverage of editorial disputes, and press coverage listed here may come from sources otherwise considered unreliable.

The use of this template does not mean:

  • Every claim in an article linked to with this template is true.
  • Wikipedia is officially declaring the websites in it to be reliable sources.
  • Wikipedia is officially declaring the websites in it to be "news outlets", an official categorization that is more prestigious than "websites".

Use common sense, and do not use this template to link to outing of Wikipedia editors (e.g. forum threads where people are trying to dox users). Be mindful of guidelines such as WP:LINKLOVE and WP:ELBLP, as well as the biographies of living persons policy (which applies to all pages, including talk pages). When in doubt, discuss the appropriateness of the template and sources on the article's talk page, or consider seeking input at the Biographies of Living Persons Noticeboard or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard.

Basic

{{Press
 |title       =
 |date        =
 |org         = <!-- media outlet/agency/organization -->
 |url         =
 |accessdate  = <!-- do not wikilink -->
}}

Complete

This template takes the following input:

{{Press
 | <!-- default message is "mentioned by a media organization"; use the unnamed optional parameter to override this -->
 |subject = <!-- type of Wikipedia page (defaults to "article" but can be set to any namespace: "template", "category", "help", etc.) -->
 |author      =
 |title       = <!-- or |articlename= -->
 |date        =
 |org         = <!-- media outlet/agency/organization -->
 |url         =
 |lang        = <!-- default is English -->
 |quote       =
 |archiveurl = <!-- URL of an archived copy of the page, if the original URL becomes unavailable. -->
 |archivedate = <!-- do not wikilink -->
 |accessdate  = <!-- do not wikilink -->
}}

The unnamed parameter optionally allows you to rephrase the default "mentioned by a media organization" phrase that links to Wikipedia:Press coverage. For example, it may be more accurate to read "mentioned unfavorably", in case the original article becomes unavailable.

The |subject= parameter is optional. The default assumption is "article", i.e. you add this template to a Wikipedia article, resulting in the phrase "this article has been mentioned...". As an example of when you might use this parameter, let's say you are about to add press coverage of a template page and not an article page: use |subject=template to display "this template has been mentioned...".

Use |collapsed=yes for a collapsed default display. To include additional sources, affix a number greater than 1 (i.e. 2, 3, etc.) to each parameter. Up to 30 sources can be added to the template.

Use |nocat=true to suppress categorization of the page. This is usually for demo purposes, such as on a template documentation page.

Redirects

[edit source]
Please note: these redirects do not change the default message - you have to do that yourself if desired. For instance, if you use the {{online source}} redirect, you might want to use {{online source|mentioned by an online source}} to match the message to your chosen redirect.
