The Solomons island thrush (Turdus kulambangrae), also known as the Guadalcanal island thrush,[1] is a species of passerine in the family Turdidae. It is endemic to the Solomon Islands. Prior to 2024, it was considered to be two different subspecies of the island thrush.
Taxonomy
[edit | edit source]The Solomons island thrush was first described in 1941 by ornithologist Ernst Mayr as a subspecies of island thrush. However following a 2023 phylogenic study of the island thrush complex, the island thrush was split into 17 species by the IOC and Clements checklist.[2][3][4]
There are currently two recognized subspecies:[1]
- Turdus kulambangrae kulambangrae Mayr, 1941 – Found on Kolombangara
- Turdus kulambangrae sladeni Cain & Galbraith, 1955 – Found on Guadalcanal
