Shoreham Airshow took place annually in the late summer at Brighton City Airport (commonly known as Shoreham Airport), on the south coast of England. It was organised by volunteers from the local branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), and held in aid of the RAFA Wings Appeal.
The airshow began in 1989.[1] It had flying and static displays by a variety of aircraft such as fast jets, military helicopters, aerobatic aircraft and historic aircraft. There were ground displays by organisations such as local flying clubs and the armed forces, and of classic cars and vehicles. The show raised more than £2 million for the RAFA over 25 years.[2]
Following the 2015 Shoreham Airshow crash, it was announced in January 2016 that the 2016 event was cancelled,[3] and it has not been held since.[4]
Incidents
[edit | edit source]- 15 September 2007: a Second World War vintage Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft involved in the RAFA Air Display crashed near Lancing College. The pilot, Brian Brown, was killed in the crash, the first fatality in the history of the airshow.[5] The next year's show featured a special tribute to Brown.
- 22 August 2010: a Swift S-1 aerobatic glider stalled during its final low-level turn to land and crashed onto the runway. The pilot suffered three broken vertebrae.[6]
- 22 August 2015: a Hawker Hunter aircraft crashed outside the aerodrome boundary while displaying in the 2015 air show. Eleven people were killed.[7]
