Shamoon Abbasi (Urdu: شمعون عباسی; born 4 April 1973) is a Pakistani actor, director, producer and screenwriter, best known for portraying villain roles.[1]

Early life and family

[edit | edit source]

In his early years Abbasi was a footballer, captaining the U-17 team at school level.[2]

His father Zubair Abbasi was a novelist and drama writer, as is his aunt, Seema Ghazal, whose own son Syed Ali Raza Usama is a well-known director.[3] Zubair's younger brother, Uzair Abbasi, was a television actor.[4] His sister Anoushay Abbasi is an actress, while his ex-wife, Javeria Abbasi, is a TV personality as well, and their daughter, Anzela Abbasi, is a TV actress too, from whom he is estranged.[5]

Through his sister Anoushay, he is related to Ainan Arif who is his brother-in-law, and son of late Pakistani international cricketer Taslim Arif and actress Rubina Arif who had the role of "Micheal Magnet" in the 2013 movie Main Hoon Shahid Afridi.[6]

Career

[edit | edit source]

Actor

[edit | edit source]

Abbasi began his acting career in 1997 with Titli, a telefilm by Yasir Akhtar, before getting recognition for his comic role in the PTV drama Kashish in 1999. The same year, he turned director with the thriller Karoron ka Aadmi.[7] In 2022, he starred in the drama Bakhtawar.[8]

When it comes to film, in 2013 he played the role of Ramal, the main antagonist in the box-office success Waar. In 2023, he played the role of alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav, in the movie Dhai Chaal.[9]

Producer

[edit | edit source]

Abbasi is credited with introducing the web-series format to Pakistan. In the early 2000s, he launched one of the country's first mystery and action serials, aiming to shift production trends away from conventional family-centered narratives. He also played a key role in scouting and promoting emerging talent, including actors such as Neelum Munir, Mohib Mirza, and Adnan Shah Tipu. As digital media gained popularity, Abbasi continued to develop web-based content, emphasizing that strong storytelling does not necessarily require large production budgets. His short films Mein Rahoon Gi and Zinda were both nominated for awards, with Zinda receiving particular critical acclaim.[7]

Controversies

Domestic abuse allegations (2019)

[edit | edit source]

Abbasi faced controversy in 2019 following allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife, actress Humaima Malick. Malick shared on social media that she had endured an abusive marriage and a subsequent toxic relationship, stating, "I was threatened, abused, and beaten to death not once but many times."[10]

As of now, there have been no legal proceedings or formal charges against Abbasi related to these allegations. The situation remains a subject of public discourse, highlighting issues of domestic abuse and the complexities of personal relationships in the public eye.[11]
