Retta Thala (transl. Two-headed) is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Kris Thirukumaran and produced by Bobby Balachandran under his BTG Universal banner. The film stars Arun Vijay in a dual role alongside Siddhi Idnani and Tanya Ravichandran. The film also includes Kannada actor Yogi Samy as an antagonist, alongside Hareesh Peradi, John Vijay, and Balaji Murugadoss in supporting roles.[1]

The film has music composed by Sam C. S., editing handled by Llewllyn Anthony Gonsalvez, and cinematography by Tijo Tomy. The film was officially announced on 4 April with the working title AV36 and the title Retta Thala was revealed on 23 April 2024.[2] Principal photography began on 29 April and wrapped up on 1 October 2024.[3]

Retta Thala is scheduled to release in theatres on 25 December 2025.

On 4 April 2024, actor Arun Vijay's 36th film was launched with a working title AV36 by the director Lokesh Kanagaraj[4] after a formal puja in Chennai.[5] The film marks the third production venture of Bobby Balachandran under his BTG Universal banner headed by Dr. M. Manoj Beno.[6] The film also marks the third directorial venture of Kris Thirukumaran who is known for Maan Karate (2014) and Gethu (2016).[7] The action thriller film[8] also stars Siddhi Idnani, Tanya Ravichandran[9] and Kannada actor Yogesh making his debut in Tamil portraying the role of an antagonist.[10] The film has an ensemble cast including Hareesh Peradi, John Vijay, and Balaji Murugadoss in supporting roles.[11]

The technical team consists of editor Anthony, cinematographer Tijo Tomy, stunt choreographers-duo Anbariv and Prabhu.[12] The music is composed by Sam C. S.[13]

Filming and post-production

Principal photography was planned to commence by the end of April 2024 in various locations like Goa, Pondicherry, Tharangampadi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Ukraine.[14] As planned, the filming began on 29 April 2024 and,[15] got wrapped in mid-June 2024.[16] After a break, the team resumed its shooting[17] and on 26 September the makers announced their commencement of their short and final schedule at Goa.[18][19] The final schedule got wrapped on 1 October[20] which was officially confirmed on 19 October 2024.[21] On 25 January 2025, the production house announced that Arun Vijay had completed dubbing for his portions.[22]

The background and soundtrack is composed by Sam C. S.[23] On 8 April 2025, it was announced that Dhanush has lent his voice for a special song in the film.[24] The audio rights have been acquired by T-Series.[25] The first single titled "Kannamma" sung by Dhanush was released on 19 September 2025.[26] The second single titled "Kandara Kolli" was released on 21 November 2025.[27] The third single titled "Dark Theme" was released on 12 December 2025.[28]

Marketing

On 23 April 2024, Karthik Subbaraj, G. V. Prakash Kumar, and Vishnu Vishal unveiled the title of the film Retta Thala,[29] meaning Double Heads with the first-look poster featuring the lead actor in dual roles.[30][2] Arun Vijay, over his social media handle acknowledged and thanked director AR Murugadoss for giving away the title rights that he had been holding for about 10 years for his project with Ajith Kumar.[31] The teaser of the film was released on 7 August 2025 by Sivakarthikeyan, with whom Thirukumaran made his debut through Maan Karate (2014).[32]

Release

Retta Thala is scheduled to release in theatres on 25 December 2025, Christmas day.[33] Earlier the film was scheduled for 18 December.[34][35]
