Rahman ({{|ˈrɑːmɑːn}}) is a given name and surname of Arabic origin. The name derives from the Arabic root raḥm (ر ح م), meaning "mercy" or "compassion", and is associated with Ar-Rahmān (ٱلرَّحْمَـٰن), one of the names of God in Islam. In many Muslim-majority cultures the element Rahman appears as an independent name, as part of compound names (for example, Abd al-Rahman / Abdur Rahman), and as a patronymic or family name across South Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Southeast Asia.

Etymology

[edit | edit source]

The element Rahman originates from the Arabic adjective raḥmān (رحمن), often translated as "the Merciful" or "most Merciful". In Islamic theology Ar-Rahmān is an epithet of God and appears frequently in the Qur'an. Use of the name in personal names reflects religious and cultural traditions that invoke divine attributes.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Rahman functions both as:

  • a given name in some regions;
  • a component of compound names, notably Abd al-Rahman (servant of the Merciful);
  • a surname or family name, particularly in South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan), where Arabic-derived names became established through Islamic and cultural influence.

The form and transliteration vary by language and orthography: Rahman, Rehman, Ruhman, and others.

Variants and transliteration

[edit | edit source]

Common variant spellings and related forms include:

  • Abd al-Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Abdelrahman
  • Rehman (South Asian variant)
  • Rahmaan, Rahmun

Transliterations depend on local scripts (Arabic, Bengali, Devanagari, Urdu, Latin) and phonological systems.
