Oba is a town in the Idemili South local government area of Anambra State, Nigeria. The town comprises various villages and has a growing population involved in trade, transport, small scale industry, agriculture and real estate development.
Geography
[edit | edit source]Oba is located in southeastern Nigeria within a humid rainforest region of the country. The area experiences a rainy season(roughly April-october) and a dry season (roughly November-March).
Climate change
[edit | edit source]Climate change has gradually influenced weather patterns in Oba and surrounding parts of Anambra State. In recent years residents have experienced more irregular rainfall, often with heavier downpours that contribute to flooding in low lying areas. Rising temperatures during the dry season have also led to increase heat stress and reduced soil moisture, affecting agricultural activities.[1]
Flooding
[edit | edit source]in mid 2025, residents of Vision World Estate in Uruokokwu Umuogali Oba (Idemili South LGA) petitioned the state government for help, citing severe flooding and erosion that led to the collapse of one building and endangered 20 others.
flooding in Anambra state has repeatedly displaced residents, submerged homes and farmlands and destroyed infrastructure.[2]
The state government has identified communities in Idemili South among the flood prone areas and advised residents to relocate temporarily during high risk periods.[3][4]
People and occupation
[edit | edit source]The people of Oba are predominantly igbo and share cultural traditions common across southeastern Nigeria. Agriculture remains an important occupation for some families with crops such as cassav, yam, maize, vegetables and palm produce commonly cultivated in surrounding farmlands. A number of residents also work in carpentry, tailoring, building construction, mechanics, electrical works and other skilled trades.
