Club career

[edit | edit source]

Werder Bremen

[edit | edit source]

Woltemade joined Werder Bremen in 2010 from TS Woltmershausen. In the 2018–19 season, he scored 18 goals and made eight assists in 24 matches for Werder Bremen's U17 team in the U17 Bundesliga.[4]

Having scored seven goals in eight matches for the U19 team, Woltemade received his first team call-up for a Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen on 11 January 2020.[5] On 1 February, he made his professional debut in a 2–1 league defeat away to FC Augsburg, becoming the youngest Bundesliga player in Werder Bremen's history at 17 years, 11 months, and 16 days.[4]

Loan to SV Elversberg

[edit | edit source]

In August 2022, Woltemade joined newly-promoted 3. Liga club SV Elversberg on a one-year loan.[6] He scored ten goals in the league, helping his club achieve back-to-back promotions to the 2. Bundesliga, and earning the 3. Liga Player of the Season award.[7]

VfB Stuttgart

[edit | edit source]

Ahead of the 2024–25 season, Woltemade moved to VfB Stuttgart and signed a four-year contract with the club.[8] He ended his first season with 17 goals scored in all competitions, including a goal in the DFB-Pokal final, which his side won.[9][10]

Newcastle United

[edit | edit source]

On 30 August 2025, Woltemade made a permanent switch to Premier League club Newcastle United in a club-record deal reported to consist of an initial fee of £65 million plus £4.3 million in potential add-ons.[11][12] On 13 September, he made his debut in the Premier League and scored the winner in a 1–0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.[13] A few weeks later, on 1 October, he netted his first UEFA Champions League goal in a 4–0 away win over Union Saint-Gilloise.[14] This made him the first Newcastle player to score on both his Premier League and UEFA Champions League starts.[15] On 5 October, Woltemade scored a penalty in a 2–0 win over Nottingham Forest, becoming only the third player to score in his first three matches at St James' Park, behind Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer.[16] In his first fifteen games for Newcastle and Germany in the 2025–26 season, Manchester City's Gianluigi Donnarumma became the first goalkeeper to save a Woltemade shot at goal.[17]

On 14 December 2025, Woltemade scored an own goal in a 1–0 defeat for Newcastle in the first Wear-Tyne derby in the Premier League since 2016.[18]

International career

[edit | edit source]

Woltemade was a youth international footballer for Germany who competed in the 2019 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.[19]

Woltemade was included in the Germany squad at the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, scoring a hat-trick in Germany's 3–0 group victory against Slovenia. He scored his fourth goal of the tournament in a 4–2 victory against the Czech Republic, as Germany confirmed their progression to the knockout stage of the competition and ended the tournament as finalist and top scorer with six goals.[20]

On 22 May 2025, Woltemade received his first call-up to the Germany national team for the Nations League Finals.[21] On 4 June, he debuted in the semi-final against Portugal.[22] On 13 October, he scored his first goal for his country in a 1–0 win over Northern Ireland.[23]
