Early life

[edit | edit source]

Nehal Chudasama was born and raised in Mumbai, India. Her father was a flower seller of Gujarati origin.[4] Growing up, she faced constant financial struggles. Chudasama's teenage years were challenging. She lost her mother due to ovarian cancer at the age of 13. After her mother's death, Chudasama had to take over her mother's responsibilities of cooking and other household chores, though she continued with her school. She spoke at a TEDx event, "It was my responsibility to cook food for the entire family every day, which included 15 rotis, rice, one sabzi and dal."[5] Her father wasn't very supportive of her interest in fashion and beauty contests.

Chudasama was bullied for her darker skin tone, being overweight, and was subject to body shaming.[6] She suffered from depression during her teenage years.[7] She later revealed that she was physically assaulted by a man whom she had known for two years. She also reported that she was stalked, mentally harassed, and attacked in public.[6] In 2016, she lost 20 kilograms of weight in three months, so that she could be fit to participate in Miss India. Despite her initial unsuccessful attempts to become Miss India in 2015, 2016, and 2017, she finally made it to attain that title in 2018.[5]
