Wikicite is a program for Microsoft Windows that helps people to properly add inline references to Wikipedia articles. A more powerful, webpage based version of this tool is available here.

Wikicite was written by David Moss in Visual Basic .NET during 2006. It is open source, free software. The source code is available for download as a zipped Visual Studio .NET project.

As of version 1.0.2515.41459 the Year fields accept up to 10 characters to meet a request from a user.

As of version 1.0.2516.19377 the Year fields accept up to 20 characters to meet a user's request, and the extra square brackets no longer appear around the Date Accessed field.

As of version 1.0.2647.27751 access date style and language are available on the web template.

Installation

The program does not need to be installed and makes no registry entries. To run it, simply copy the executable to a convenient place on any computer capable of running .NET programs. Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 can run .NET programs.

Usage

Wikicite can produce perfectly formed Wikipedia references for Web, Journal and Book sources.

1. Select the appropriate tab for the reference type
2. Fill in the fields (Those labeled in black are mandatory, fields labelled in green are optional)
3. Click the button at the bottom of the form to copy the reference to the clipboard.
4. Paste the reference into the edit form on Wikipedia

Wikipedia referencing

Wikicite produces references that conform to the Wikipedia footnote style of referencing.

In this style references are inserted into the text of the article and are displayed as superscripted numbers that hyperlink to detailed information about the source in the references section. The references section is usually located at the end of the article, just before the category information.

Example

The following text has a Web reference produced by Wikicite included:

David Moss is the author of The Australian Politics Resource, the first website in the world to provide complete, detailed and unbiased coverage of Australian politics. APR has just returned to the web after an absence of 6 years.

This text is repeated below between <nowiki> tags to illustrate how the reference was inserted:

David Moss is the author of ''The Australian Politics Resource'', the first website in the world to provide complete, detailed and unbiased coverage of Australian politics.<ref name="apr1">{{Cite web|url=http://sunnybar.dynip.com/politics/|title=The Australian Politics Resource|accessdate=2006-11-14|publisher=The Australian Politics Resource|year=2006|author=David Moss|work=APR Website|format=html}}</ref> APR has just returned to the web after an absence of 6 years.

Using Wikicite makes this style of referencing easy. Just fill in the form on Wikicite, click the button to copy the reference to the clipboard, and paste it into the edit form on Wikipedia where you want the supercripted reference number to appear.

References section

For this kind of referencing to work, the Wikipedia article must have a References section. By convention this section is the last to appear in a Wikipedia article, just before the Category information. Adding a references section to an article is easy. Just add the text:

to the end of the article, just before the categories are listed. Wikipedia does the rest. No matter how many references are inserted in the article, the MediaWiki software automatically populates the references section and ensures they are properly displayed.
