MyWiki:WikiProject User warnings/Testing/Shared IPs

Many users of Wikipedia are accessing the site from a library, mobile hotspot, or other shared IP address, and their first experience with the editing community may be a talk page full of warnings that are not directed at them. This test aims to measure the effect of vigorously archiving old messages on shared IP talk pages. We have divided Category:Wikipedia user talk pages of shared IP addresses (about 38,000 talk pages) in half. The control group is left untouched, while the test group is archived every 14 days (if there are no edits or active blocks on that page). We have also replaced the header templates on some of these pages with more friendly, welcoming messages that encourage users to create an account. At the end of the test, we will measure:

  1. Whether there was an increase in constructive editing from IPs that had their pages archived.
  2. Whether there was an increase in number of registered accounts from IPs that had their header templates replaced.

Note: Before carrying out this test, we received approval on VPR and BRFA for the bot, SharedIPArchiveBot, that is performing the archiving.
