The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO; French: Organisation mondiale de la propriété intellectuelle (OMPI)) is one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN).[notes 1] Pursuant to the 1967 Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO was created to promote and protect intellectual property (IP) across the world by cooperating with countries as well as international organizations. It began operations on 26 April 1970 when the convention entered into force. The current Director General is Singaporean Daren Tang, former head of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, who began his term on 1 October 2020.

Collaboration with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

[edit source]
Wikimedia has been collaborating with organisations in education, science, culture and many other areas for over 10 years, and several projects have been implemented with UN agencies. A specific area of Wikimedia called Wikiproject United Nations has been set up to help all UN agencies share content and knowledge on Wikimedia projects. A full list and history of those collaborations may be found here. WIPO has been collaborating with Wikimedia since 2021, which resulted with the creation and improvement of several articles on the English Wikipedia, as well as additions to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Since February 2022, Florence Devouard is working as Wikimedian in Residence at WIPO to help WIPO share its knowledge and content through Wikipedia.

WIPO publications are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 since 2017 [1]. When we started working with WIPO, the website had some restrictions. But thanks to our cooperation, WIPO made it clear that except for some content published under more restrictive terms, new WIPO online publications and other online content are issued under an Attribution 4.0 International CC license (CC BY 4.0).

Our WIR activity with WIPO is being implemented in 4 languages (EN, FR, ES, AR) by 3 different wikipedians in residence. We summarize our activities and impact on meta :m: WikiProject:United Nations/WIPO
