Goals and Scope

Welcome to WikiProject Seamounts, a collaboration area and group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of seamounts and related subjects. For more information on WikiProjects in general, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject and the Guide to WikiProjects.

Goals

• This WikiProject aims to enhance information on seamounts, volcanology, igneous petrology, and related articles.

Scope

• All articles about seamounts, mid-ocean ridges, and other oceanic mountain structures.
• Also articles about many types of seamounts (guyots, submarine volcanoes, submerged continental fragments) are within the scope.
• Articles about some oceanic species are included within the project's scope because of their association with seamounts.
• Articles about some marine protected areas which have been set aside primarily because of their seamounts.
• Articles about people, places, or other entities notable for their association with a seamount.

Please feel free to join the project and expand its scope in any necessary directions.

• Add {{Infobox Seamount}} to articles if needed and missing, and add seamount-related fields to existing infoboxes if these are missing.
  Use {{convert}} templates to ensure accurate conversion of elevations, distances, areas, and volumes.
• Expand seamount articles which are stubs, especially by adding photos and (most importantly) proper references.

The major category, Category:Seamounts, should be reserved for articles about types of seamounts, while specific individual volcanoes and volcanic belts / fields / regions / zones should be listed in the appropriate subcategories. Next, please ensure that it has the correct seamount type categories (one or more, in some cases): Seamounts Seamounts by sea or ocean Seamount chains Guyots Submarine volcanoes Seamounts Volcanoes by sea or ocean Submarine calderas Submarine volcanoes of Indonesia Former islands Former islands by country Islands of the Aral Sea Ephemeral islands Former islands from the last glacial maximum Guyots Getting Good Images Wikimedia Commons has many images of volcanoes and volcanic phenomena, along with igneous rocks. Many of these photos would make useful additions to many of our articles here which may be lacking adequate illustrations. However, we have built a subpage database, /Images that records many of the significant images used on Seamount and Seamount related articles. Please see the Commons categories at right, or try searching Commons since many images available there are not properly categorized yet. Assessment User:WP 1.0 bot/Tables/Project/WikiProject Seamounts In order to easily identify articles in need of attention, article assessments have been implemented. These are generated using the optional class and importance parameters in the {{WikiProject Seamounts}} project banner on an article's talk page: {{WikiProject Seamount | class= | importance= }} Articles in need of expansion The most important such article is Seamount. In general, "B" class articles which are "Mid" importance or higher should be polished up and nominated as good articles. The easiest way to find articles which fall within a particular intersection of quality and importance categories is to use the assessments worklist, which is transcluded from Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/WikiProject Seamounts articles by quality. Please the Assessment department for details. Project watchlist Using the bot-generated assessment logs, it is now possible to generate a watchlist which includes all articles within the project's scope. All of the logs have been combined into a single large file with all dates unlinked, so that the following link provides a single unified watchlist which should include all talk pages which have {{WikiProject Seamounts}} tags, along with their corresponding articles: Special:Recentchangeslinked/Wikipedia:WikiProject Seamounts/Assessment/Log complete It is also quite simple to generate a watchlist which includes only the talk pages: Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:WikiProject Seamounts articles Similar Wikiprojects Most (but not all) seamounts are also volcanoes, so they fall within the scope of WikiProject Volcanoes. However, there is also an extremely useful template for generating a "map" of the object from a blank map, via {{Template:Location map}}. Alternatively, you may grab a blank map, place a marker on it, and upload it.
