An anatomy of defeat: Why San Fernando Valley failed to secede from Los Angeles

[edit source]

{{resolved}}

  • Lua error in Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration at line 2172: attempt to index field '?' (a nil value).

For User:Theleekycauldron/San Fernando Valley secession efforts. There's a PDF online, but it has to be a preprint because it claims to be from November 2001 and talks about a 2001 referendum, except neither of those are possible because the referendum was in 2002. So, I'm looking for the actual published copy in the hopes that it's not error-riddled. Thanks :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 22:24, 14 August 2025 (UTC)

The journal on WorldCat. Averageuntitleduser (talk) 16:36, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
theleekycauldron, the online PDF appears to be a preprint, as you say; among other things, there are highlighted placeholders and notes (e.g., a note dated March 3, 2003, that says "Need clarify if maps and tables go together or have separate Figure numbers. Also need source info on one map"). I requested this from my library, noting that I was trying to find the final version rather than the preprint—it then sent me an electronic copy with the same placeholders and notes. I can follow up and ask them to try again, but it might also be helpful to reach out to the authors and see if they can send you a copy of the final version. The email for Tom Hogen-Esch is found here, and the email for Martin Saiz here. --Usernameunique (talk) 20:08, 2 December 2025 (UTC)
I had tried an ILL as well a few months ago (Special:diff/1306772236), and they sent me the preprint as well. I got a scan of the TOC+frontmatter of a physical copy from Princeton a few weeks ago, and I followed up on that last week by requesting a scan of the physical printed article. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:27, 2 December 2025 (UTC)

Trying to establish if this book is available through the Wikipedia Library. I don't think it is, but would be grateful if someone could check for me. Because I'm not sure which chapter(s) would be of most use to me, I'm not asking for a copy of the resource, just want to know if I'm missing it. Thanks. Tacyarg (talk) 10:43, 16 August 2025 (UTC)

@Tacyarg: As far as I can tell, we do not have access to it through TWL. Bloomsbury has a "Search within this book" function, so you could try that if you'd like. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 16:16, 16 August 2025 (UTC)

@Tacyarg We have this book at Virginia Tech, so I can grab a chapter(s) you need. GGOTCC 07:33, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
Tacyarg, any word on what chapters you need? Sounds like GGOTCC may be able to get them. --Usernameunique (talk) 03:31, 2 December 2025 (UTC)

For Draft:Spektr, I'm looking to see if this article contributes to WP:NCORP, but it seems paywalled.

Thanks, Perryprog (talk) 20:48, 8 September 2025 (UTC)

Perryprog, it's always somewhat difficult to get behind paywalls in other languages, given that fewer people on the English Wikipedia are likely to have access. But you could try emailing the author (if you click her name on the article, it pops up with an email). You could also try asking the main contributors to the Danish Wikipedia article on Dagbladet Børsen (da), who might have access. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:53, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
Usernameunique, yeah... that's probably the best bet. Given that the draft has stalled I'm willing to just let it go for now, so I'll mark this resolved. Perryprog (talk) 15:41, 8 December 2025 (UTC)

{{Withdrawn}}

I'm looking to verify this citation used in Shoulder tap (alcohol):

  • "MADD sting shows it's easy for minors to get booze", Boston Herald, May 23, 2001.

The citation was in the original 2005 article, created by a user who's no longer active so I can't just reach out and ask. I searched various archives but couldn't find anything I could access where I am.

I'd appreciate if someone could send me the article to make sure the current version represents it accurately.

I looked at pretty much every suggestion from WP:Find your source § Newspaper articles including the Wikipedia library and the Internet Archive, the only place I could find it is GenealogyBank but unfortunately it's behind a paywall.
ProQuest is a good idea, it's mentioned here, though my uni doesn't provide access to the Boston Herald it seems.

For The Matrix. Apologies for the lack of info, the existing ref is literally (ref name="janet")Wonderland Magazine, February 2010, page 148(/ref). I have tried the website without success.

Thanks, Darkwarriorblake (talk) 18:00, 16 September 2025 (UTC)

Darkwarriorblake, the full text of the article, which is an interview, appears to be online here. It sources the text to this URL, a now-defunct page of Wonderland's website. An archived version is found here; it contains only part of the interview (telling readers to buy the issue to read the full thing), suggesting that the first website manually copied most of the text. Note that there are plenty of copies of the magazine online (far fewer in libraries), although most show only the cover. One partial exception is here, which shows part of the interview (including part that wasn't available on Wonderland's website, but is available on the first website—thus corroborating the accuracy of the first website). Incidentally, it looks like the article/interview was 15 pages long. As for Jackson's discussion of The Matrix, "There was a time when I met with the Wachowski brothers to do The Matrix, a long time ago, but there were scheduling conflicts." --Usernameunique (talk) 06:20, 8 December 2025 (UTC)

Thanks, CorrectionsJackal (correct me) 06:26, 18 September 2025 (UTC)

CorrectionsJackal I'm not sure if that's the answer you are looking for, but the organisation itself claims to do that on its front page, and that's WP:ABOUTSELF. Now whether you should include it in the article, instead of describing what narratives it has disrupted, which changes in power it enacted or enabled and what was its impact on pro-Palestinian activism is another matter. Page 85 of the above book has following sentence,

.."it is believed that on every eighth tithe of the bright half of the month, it begins to shake and produces the most extraordinary effect"..

. This sentence seem to have a spelling mistake being discussed at Talk:Sharada Peeth#the word tithe is incorrect.

Above citation has been used on the article Sharada Peeth. I do not need the page but rather need help in finding out whether the author Raina has given any information from exact which book and edition she herself sourced sentence.

I wish to have following information

  • Whether she has any given information / reference to the sentence? at the end of page no.85 or at the end of chapter, or end of the book?
  • Or if her bibliography contains mention of "Abū al-Faz̤l ibn Mubārak, The Āʼīn-i Akbarī, vol. 2, translated by H.S. Jarrett, edited by Jadunath Sarkar," If yes then which edition?

Bookku, is this what you need? I'm not sure if it's the published edition or perhaps an earlier draft—there's no publication information, for example, and the pagination appears different—but it has the same line (on page 79). The paragraph in question reads: Even in the 16th century the temple of Sarada must have enjoyed considerable reputation in Kashmir as is evident from Abul Fazl’s following note, "at two day’s distance from Hayahom is the river named Madhumati, which flows from the Darda country. Gold is also found in this river. On its banks is a stone temple called Sharada, dedicated to Durga and regarded with great veneration. It is believed that on every, eighth tithe of the bright half of the month, it begins to shake and produces the most extraordinary effect."72 Footnote 72 is on page 328, and reads Abul Fazl’s: notice of the site Ain V. ii-p 365. ARandomName123, it looks like you're looking for "The 100th Birthday of Academician Sergei Sergeevich Smirnov (1895–1947)" (see snippet) on pages 249–251, by N. P. Laverov & D. V. Rundquist (see snippet). This is in volume 37(4), which is July–August 1995 (see snippet). I've added this all to the cite above, along with the ISSN. I assume that the reason you asked for pages 245–255 is because you knew the article you want included page 250, and you were trying to ensure that you get the full thing? Just checking in case I erroneously truncated the page range you want. --Usernameunique (talk) 04:00, 11 December 2025 (UTC)

Warriors debuted at number one on Billboard's compilation albums chart, and reached the top 25 in Billboard's Top Current Album Sales and Top Album Sales charts.[1]

Aviationwikiflight, I've asked the University of Michigan Library if they're able to provide the full bibliographic information, particularly the issue number, report title, and page range. The librarian wasn't able to see the full view on Hathitrust/Google Books (despite the fact that the scan came from their copy), but forwarded the request to a librarian at Buhr, who will hopefully check and follow up (per the librarian I chatted with, "This can take a couple of weeks, but hopefully no more than that if they get to it before the holidays"). That won't result in the full report immediately, but it will make it easier to request via ILL, as we'll know the precise information to request. --Usernameunique (talk) 19:15, 1 December 2025 (UTC)
Aviationwikiflight, here's the response from Michigan: "It appears this flight is mentioned in what we have labeled no.96 which is titled Aircraft Accident DIgest no.18 volume 1. It is the 5th accident covered in the report and runs from pg 32-36." I'll request the article via ILL. --Usernameunique (talk) 16:40, 9 December 2025 (UTC)

Primary results in the 1978 Texas's 19th congressional district election

For User:1brianm7/sandbox/1978 Texas's 19th congressional district election, apologies if this is a bit of an unusual request. This is the first election article I am working on and I've only been able to find the data on depreciated user-generated sites, who don't say where they got it. @Mmemaigret Thank you and apologies for the late reply. Those sources are useful and thank you for finding them. I am primarily looking for a verifiable source that has the final total of all candidates (and not just Bush). I can only find them in a depreciated (and dead) website and while they are probably correct, I can't cite them. I have some early newspaper returns that are a dozen or so votes off, but I'd much prefer to cite actual results. 1brianm7 (talk) 07:40, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
@1brianm7 I don't understand. Doesn't the Odessa American source have the breakdown for 6 May for both parties? MmeMaigret (talk) 08:20, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
@Mmemaigret The Odessa American source was published before some final ballot corrections. We know that Bush received 6296 votes, which has been published in reliable sources from decades later; however, the Odessa American records him as getting 6298 votes. It is probably off by a half-dozen or so votes. I very much hope to find a source that has the final results, and not the very nearly final results. 1brianm7 (talk) 22:43, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
[6] is a Texas Almanac from 1980 that has the 6296 number. So does this article from later in May 1978 [7]. This one [8] clarifies it is after the certification and gives the 6296 figure.
I couldn't find a county break from the certified results. Katzrockso (talk) 22:28, 12 December 2025 (UTC)

House of Commons Hansard 18 and 26 May 1939

[edit source]

A bit of an odd one -- William St Clair, in an article on the 1937–1938 Elgin Marbles cleaning scandal, quotes a parliamentary answer given by Harry Crookshank apparently on 20 May 1939. 20 May was a Saturday, and as far as I can tell from Hansard, the Commons did not sit on that day. In a later answer, Crookshank refers to receiving questions on that topic on 18 and 26 May, but neither has documentation available on the Hansard website.

Does anyone have access to a paper or more complete online version that might contain the question(s) at hand? The specific quote I'm trying to place is "I am assured however that the effects are imperceptible to anyone but an expert and I think it follows that the intrinsic beauty of the marbles has not been impaired", but it would be good to have both questions and answers if possible.

(In both cases, I'm assuming that multiple issues were bound together.) The latter numbering appears to be the correct one, given that in my own library's holdings, the 670s span 2006–2007. I've requested this from my library, stating that it's probably in issue #672, which I think is July 2006. If that doesn't work, however, it might work to ask a librarian at the University of Michigan to take a look, as it's their volume of issues 672–674 that Google scanned; this was recently successful with an above request. --Usernameunique (talk) 03:12, 11 December 2025 (UTC)

The tales are Hungarian variants of the Animal as Bridegroom cycle. I intend to separate the Hungarian-only tales from "The Enchanted Prince Who was a Hedgehog", which is sourced from a Romani-Hungarian source. There is some overlap between Romani-Hungarian and Hungarian tales, since Hungary has a sizable Romani population, but, since we have an article about Romani folklore which lists other Romani-only tales, I think it's best to create independent articles for each.

EDIT: Actually, vol. 10 of the MNK folktale catalogue, which indexes the Romani-Hungarian tales, list these (/\) tales above as from Romani-Hungarian sources.

For Poly Styrene

Hello, does anyone have access to The Times newspaper in the UK? This article ( https://www.thetimes.com/sunday-times-rich-list/profile/article/i-had-to-leave-mum-when-i-was-eight-for-the-sake-of-my-sanity-vql5shf0x0h ) is referred to on the Poly Styrene article page but its quoted from a secondary article, so I would like to read it and improve the citation if possible,

Thanks, Rhagfyr (talk) 20:53, 30 November 2025 (UTC)

@Rhagfyr, it's available via archive.today at http://archive.today/2025.11.30-212058/https://www.thetimes.com/sunday-times-rich-list/profile/article/i-had-to-leave-mum-when-i-was-eight-for-the-sake-of-my-sanity-vql5shf0x0h. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 21:25, 30 November 2025 (UTC)

@UndercoverClassicist, although a different publication, I think that this book chapter is the article you want. Right at the end it says [= Teiresias Supplement 3 (Montreal 1990) 103–9.]
Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 08:31, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Hi @UndercoverClassicist, is there any substantial difference between the requested source and chapter 16 of Ovid and Boiotia (written by Schachter)? If not, the Wikipedia Library has access to that chapter, here.
I ask because this static1.squarespace.com link, found on Google, appears to be the resource you requested; from a quick scan, I believe it is the same text. You are welcome to check out the link I found on Google; I believe it comes from the website https://www.teiresias-journal.org/supplements. However, as with all links on the Internet, I would be careful as to how you approach it. Staraction (talk · contribs) 08:31, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
