Purpose
[edit source]The purpose of this initiative is to improve Wikipedia's coverage of the native ferns of northeastern and north-central North America, as covered by the Peterson Field Guide to Ferns of Northeastern and Central North America, by Cobb, Farnsworth & Lowe. This scope was chosen as it appears to correspond with the interests of the current members of WikiProject Pteridophyta. The table below allows members of the project to coordinate their efforts to improve fern article quality and referencing, and request photographs of additional species.
Goals
[edit source]Some suggested goals for the initiative:
- Create articles for all listed ferns.
- Raise all articles to Start class or above.
- Place inline references for all articles and address other referencing issues.
- Organize all articles according to Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Template. (A suitable "Description", "Taxonomy", "Distribution and habitat" and "Ecology" section, with others as appropriate.)
- Obtain photographs for 90% of articles.
- Raise 75% of all articles to B class or above.
Table of Progress
[edit source]This table lists, in the order that they occur, the fern species covered in Cobb, Farnsworth & Lowe, as well as new native species since discovered or created by taxonomic splitting.
After the name of the species, several measures of article quality are assessed. The second column of the table, "Quality" contains the standard Wikipedia Assessment quality ranking of the article. The third column, "Illustration", indicates whether a photo (File:Camera-photo.svg), drawing (File:Inkscape paintbrush.svg), or no picture (blank) exists of the species on Wikimedia Commons. The fourth column, "References", displays an File:Symbol delete vote.svg icon if referencing issues, in general, exist for an article ("citation needed" tags, no references section, etc.) The fifth column, "Inline References", displays an File:Symbol delete vote.svg icon if the article lacks inline references. Note that even articles which have inline references may have them deployed in a perfunctory or unsatisfactory fashion. The sixth column, "State", can be used to indicate that an article is currently being worked on (File:Padlock.svg), or that the article has recently updated and needs re-assessment (File:Symbol question.svg).
