U.S. Newspapers sub-project
[edit source]The Wikipedia: WikiProject Newspapers has a sub-project researching current and defunct United States newspapers. The following template contains links to the current Wikipedia lists of newspapers in each of the 50 states, territories, and the District of Columbia. Most of these lists are grouped or sortable by name of the newspapers, location where the newspaper was published, and year founded. There may also be lists for defunct newspapers within these lists or in separate articles.
The links below are to research pages for researching articles or lists of newspapers in each of the 50 U.S. states and District of Columbia. These pages contain list specific resources for researching newspapers in each state/district and a list of draft newspapers needed or draft articles being created for each state. Before adding a new draft article, review the above lists of newspapers to make sure the article has not already been created.

A short 5 minute video shows how to add resources to one of these state pages.

This Wikidata query will generate an up-to-date map of all U.S. newspapers with a Wikidata entry. Once you generate the live map, you can zoom in on specific locations, and click on the dots to get links to the Wikidata and Wikipedia entries. (See legend in screenshot at right.) To generate the map, first click the link, then click the blue arrow on the lower left of the page. Thanks to 99of9 for creating the query!
All U.S. states have list class articles showing current and defunct newspapers located within the state. This sub-project project aims to fill an important gap on Wikipedia: There are over 156 thousand newspapers that have existed in the United States according to the Library of Congress's Chronicling America project[1]. Most of the major newspapers have Wikipeida articles. However, many notable historical and local newspapers have no Wikipedia entry or have a very minimal stub. When people read stories from one of these newspapers (while reading or writing Wikipedia articles, or in any scenario), Wikipedia should serve as a resource for them to evaluate, at least at a basic level, its quality as a source. This project's current major initiative is to create new newspaper articles with entries of basic information in the list of newspapers by state, infoboxes using the {{Infobox newspaper}} template, images, street address and coordiantes, history section, and talk page with the {{WikiProject Newspapers}} template.
Since it should be a relatively simple task to gather and assemble the information in the state lists and create a short article with Infobox and history, we hope to recruit some new Wikipedia editors, such as students guided by class assignments, in the process.
Based on the success of this project in 2018, we hope it can serve as a model for future projects for newspapers in other parts of the world.
