This Copy Editing Backlog Elimination Drive is a one-month-long effort of the Guild of Copy Editors to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy editing, signified by the {{copyedit}} tag or by a listing on the GOCE Requests page. Please make sure that you know how to copy edit and that you are familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style before you begin copy editing—these are specially important for articles listed on the Requests page. The drives are under the purview of the Guild's coordinators. The lead coordinator is Torchiest (talk), and he is assisted by BDD (talk) and Miniapolis (talk). If you have any questions, leave a message on the drive's talk page. This drive begins on May 1, 2013, 00:00 UTC and will end on May 31, 2013, 23:59 UTC.

Status of "articles needing copy edit" category as of the end of the drive

The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to reduce the overall backlog by as many articles as possible, with a focus on those that have been in the queue for the longest (April, May, and June 2012) and to complete all requests made on the GOCE Requests page before May 2013. Articles from the Requests page count towards your total whether they have a copy edit tag on them or not, so please feel free to select from there when you are in the mood for a better-quality article to edit. Articles tagged {{copyedit}} in April, May, and June 2012, and all requests, will receive a bonus score of 50% over and above the article's word count. Awards will be given out to those individuals who help reduce the size of the backlog.

The backlog elimination drive is open to all, and you do not need to be a member of the Guild of Copy Editors to participate. However, you may want to consider joining, as membership has its benefits. For example, you can place a special "page in use" tag when you are copy editing, and another tag on the talk page when you finish. See the Templates page. Please visit the Guild or the main drive page for more information.

Reviewing

[edit source]

GOCE coordinators and other experienced members of the Guild will carry out random checks to ensure that copy edits are of a satisfactory standard. If you are willing to help with this, please sign up below.

10% of a participant's copy edits from the backlog should be inspected. All copy edits from the Requests page should be reviewed, time permitting. Please choose articles at random, and do not inspect articles you have copy edited yourself. After checking an article, place a {{checked}} mark after the article on the listing and sign your username (just ~~~). If a rough consensus finds a copy edit is not of an acceptable standard, the tag will be re-added and the editor will be assessed a penalty of 1,200 words plus the length of the article reviewed. The reviewer may also give advice on how the edit could have been better, without penalizing the editor. Please raise any questions on the Coordinators' talk page.

Totals

[edit source]

When recording articles completed, please remember to remove any {{copyedit}} tag from that article—if you want it checked, you can request it on the drive talk page and someone will be along to do it. Do not list articles on which you have placed {{GOCEreviewed}} instead of copy editing them, or which needed no copy editing; they don't count. Please provide the full title, not an abbreviated version, and place any comments after the article title but before the word count. If the article is from the GOCE Requests page, place *R after the word count, or if it was tagged in April–June 2012, place *O after the word count. Please do not add the 50% bonus in these cases—we will apply the bonuses after the drive is over. Here is an example of a well-completed line:

# {{Completed}} [[Dark chocolate]] (yummy!) (1234) *O
