Edit-a-thon 4 - January 2026

[edit source]
Time: T.B.A. - probably later in January
Location: "The Exchange", 53-57 Exchange Place, Adelaide. (The old Adelaide Stock Exchange building, which is now occupied by the Conservation Council of South Australia.)
Agenda: Edit-a-thon - a workshop to help new editors acquire basic editing skills, and how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons for use in Wikipedia articles, especially those on SA's coastal and marine environment, as well as on other SA environment and heritage topics.

Background

[edit source]

Adelaide is the hometown of two Wikimedia Australia staff members, Alison Smith (AlphaLemur) and Belinda Spry (BindiS), who in 2025 facilitated a WMAU Partner Project with the South Australian Museum. This involved a workshop for local editors, training SAM staff in Wikipedia and Wikidata editing, as well as providing a grant for the SAM to host a paid Wikipedian in Residence (Laterthanyouthink) for 100 hours.

Alison and Belinda subsequently organised another edit-a-thon with the Art Gallery of South Australia, for new editors, focussing on improving WP articles on the artists featured in the AGSA exhibition, Dangerously Modern: Australian Women Artists in Europe 1890–1940.

The scale and duration of the 2025 algal bloom in South Australia is having a huge impact on the local marine environment, fisheries, and coastal tourism and amenity. There has been a strong response from members of community groups, including surfers, scuba divers, and regular beach-goers, and inspired interest in citizen science monitoring of the bloom.

The WP article on the bloom (started by Laterthanyouthink, and added to by Bahudhara), has in turn stimulated a lot of interest in participating in WP editing, and Belinda has offered to run this workshop for beginners. She has suggested having around 10 new participants; so far 6 people have indicated a strong interest, including members of the Marine Life Society of SA, the Great Southern Reef Foundation, the Friends of Patawalonga Creek, and the National Trust of SA.

The Exchange has excellent facilities, and is currently going through a WiFi upgrade. To enable free use of this space, the event is being auspiced by the Friends of Parks and Nature Inc., and will be advertised to FoPN's ~150 member groups, as well as others with an interest in the marine environment.

This event is being run as a pilot, and numbers will be capped, with the possibility of additional sessions being run if there is sufficient interest.
