my name is not Allen--My first name is Harold but I have I have always gone by my middle name --Wade I wish you would correct this on my Wiki page--Wade Phillips — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.177.192.51 (talk) 01:05, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@67.177.192.51: The web-based evidence isn't clear either way. I see that your own website supports your claim, but we can't use that as a reliable source. There are sources that might pass the RS test that support your claim, including this one. There are others that dispute your claim, but at least some of them have clearly taken their information from the Wikipedia article. Since the article does not currently provide a reference for "Wade Allen Phillips" , (a debatable source is better than no source at all) I will change it to "Harold Wade Phillips" using the above source as a reference, and see if it flies. It would help tremendously if you could provide a more authoritative reference. ―Mandruss  01:48, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
I have also copied this thread to the article's talk page. ―Mandruss  02:03, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
@Mandruss: Could you explain to me why we can't necessarily use a person's own web site to reference their name? I can understand if they made big claims like winning major awards but for their own name? Is this just your reading of something like WP:PRIMARY or some other guideline? (my apologies if my series of questions makes this feel unnecessarily accusatory) Dismas|(talk) 02:03, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
It's my interpretation of WP:SELFPUB. Mr. Phillips may not have written the HTML for that page, but he no doubt had a lot to say about its content and I wouldn't expect the site's owners to be entirely objective about its subject. I could certainly be wrong, I'm not a BLP expert. ―Mandruss  02:25, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
WP:COI might also apply. Actually it's a better match for my reasoning than SELFPUB. ―Mandruss  02:48, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
How can someone possibly have a conflict of interest in getting their name right? AndyTheGrump (talk) 02:52, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
As I said, I'm not a BLP expert. There are various reasons one might want to get his name wrong that are not compatible with Wikipedia principles. If WP:COI applies strictly to doing one's own edits, then it wouldn't apply. Anyway, if using his website as the source is within policy, anyone please do so or just say so and I'll do it. ―Mandruss  02:56, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Weird Template Question

[edit source]

I think that this is a template question. I went to the article Religion in Pakistan. It displays weirdly, with a tag of <noinclude> . Then there is some display, and then </noinclude> . I wondered if I should try to fix the weird display in the article, and tried to edit the source. I saw that there wasn’t anything in the article itself that would cause the weird display. After some further editing, I concluded that the weird display has to do with every article that references the template Template: Culture in Pakistan. So my question is what should I do next if anything about getting a weird display, that will look weird to the readers, and we have to consider the readers as well as us editors/writers?

One possibility would be to post to the talk page of the template, Template talk: Culture in Pakistan, but there has, until now, been nothing there, so I am not optimistic that I will get anyone’s attention. I could go ahead and edit the template to take out the noinclude tags. I don’t want to do that unless that will work. I can go ahead and post to the template talk page, but I don’t think that anyone will answer. I would like to do something because a lot of articles in mainspace really display weirdly because of this weird template thing.

I think that I have a question about a template that is causing multiple articles in article space to display weirdly.

Robert McClenon (talk) 03:20, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Dunno but it's probably caused by this edit. A revert would probably be a safe bet. ―Mandruss  03:19, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, that's got to be it: I boldly reverted it. —teb728 t c 03:39, 6 April 2015 (UTC) I see the anon made the same mistake with their next edit: I left them a note on their talk page. —teb728 t c 04:05, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:21, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
That was a recent edit. That explains why no one previously had noticed. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:34, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Logging in

[edit source]

I'm getting tired of having to log in every thirty days. Can't there be a cookie that lasts longer, like ten years? 73.190.63.125 (talk) 03:23, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@73.190.63.125: I assume there are good reasons, technical or otherwise, for the 30-day limit. In any case, this page is for questions about how to use and edit Wikipedia, not for proposals for changes, which are best handled at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals). Good luck. ―Mandruss  03:55, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Cite web templates

[edit source]

Hello. When using {{cite web}} templates, where can I find clarification on what should be "work" and what should be "publisher", when it is something published online? Thanks, C679 06:21, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Cloudz679: You can find more information on using the template on the template's documentation, located at Template:cite_web. For the cite_web template, we actually replace the work parameter with website (but they are essentially the same thing). A work can refer to the magazine, newspaper, website, etc. that hosts the work you are referencing, while the publisher is the company or entity that publishes said work. For example, if you were to cite the CIA World Factbook, you might list the work as "The World Factbook", and list the publisher as "The Central Intelligence Agency." Sometimes the two might overlap, and it's not always necessary to fill in both fields. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:35, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Confirmed User

[edit source]

how do i become a Confirmed User? cause i need it to make my user page.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hardin015 (talkcontribs) 06:51, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Take a look at WP:CONFIRM: "...most English Wikipedia user accounts that are more than four days old and have made at least 10 edits are considered autoconfirmed." It looks like you've hit 10 edits since writing this message. Scarce2 (talk) 10:05, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
You have 10 edits but still need three more days to become autoconfirmed. What do you want to do that you think requires being confirmed? If you want to upload a file then please say which file for which purpose. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:41, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Uploading a image to my User page and anywhere else to upload a image.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hardin015 (talkcontribs) 05:09, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi @Hardin015: You might find what you are looking for at Wikipedia:Uploading images where it tells how to upload an image to be used on Wikipedia, and then how to display it. Note that in order to upload an image, a user account must be at least four days old. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask here. After you write your note, please add four tildes (~~~~) to tell us your user name.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  05:58, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Not entirely sure what you're asking but it doesn't appear to be about using Wikipedia, so you're not asking it in the right place. Try asking it at the reference desk. Scarce2 (talk) 10:06, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Help with reference for John C. Lechleiter

[edit source]

Hi i don't think I will be able to figure out how to get the reference "Put the Moose on the Table" by Randall Tobias Indiana University Press, copyright 2003, done properly. I'm hoping I can get someone of you to do it for me. Thanks, and sorry also. -Richard Peterson2601:7:6580:5E3:F53F:67C0:35A6:6BFF (talk) 08:12, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Hit the edit link and you'll see something that says "Cite" in the editor toolbar. Click it and from the "Templates" menu select "cite book". Just fill out the primary data points (just title, first and last name, and the relevant page number should do). Scarce2 (talk) 10:11, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, but I clicked cite and didn't see a "templates" menu at all.2601:7:6580:5E3:A9A1:D15F:3C:D35A (talk) 17:03, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
The top of the editing screen looks about like the image below. In the editing window, click on "Cite" which is on the top right and the second line will appear. Then click on the word "Templates" which is on the left of the new line and a list of citation forms will appear below it. Then choose "cite book". I hope that works for you.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  19:20, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

[edit source]

I am doing research trying to find out about what is meant by "circle inside circle as I have several pictures that look like circles inside of circles. I was referred to Ezekiel, but I don't have a clue what this passage of the bible is talking about. I am sorry to confess that I am not very computer literate and don't have a clue as to what I am doing or what it is that you want me to do? Perhaps it would be beneficial for me to create an account with you folks.

This is all I have discovered yet except I don't know how to make reference to this discovery other than writing out this text and telling you where i found it initially. "A lot of writers have called Ezekiel's wheels a classic UFO incident. Why isn't this in the article? Does your question refer to a Wikipedia article? If it does, it might help if you told us which one. (I do not believe that fundamentalist christian editors have excessive influence here on Wikipedia.) Maproom (talk) 09:31, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
At a guess, Merkabah Mysticism might be the article, but I still don't have any clue what is being asked. CaptRik (talk) 11:54, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@180.215.36.74: If you mean that you want to create a Wikipedia article, a good place to start is Wikipedia:Your first article. I wouldn't recommended article creation as your first Wikipedia activity, it helps a lot to just edit existing articles for awhile and learn some basics before tackling article creation. I dropped some starter information on your talk page. ―Mandruss  09:57, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Hello. Writing an article about yourself is strongly discouraged: see WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY for why. If there are indeed substantial articles about you (not just listings or passing mentions) then Wikipedia could have an article about you, but written by somebody else. If that is that case, I suggest you post a request at requested articles, with some of the references that establish that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. --ColinFine (talk) 17:41, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi,

every time i post article about a person your robot delete this and said that this already used in his social profile. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tipsclick (talkcontribs) 11:55, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Yes, if you copy text from any website it is likely to be picked up by either a bot or a human, and deleted as copyright. Furthermore, if you are copying from someone's "social profile" this is unlikely to be considered a reliable source because it is not a reliable, independent source. Please read Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:COPYOTHERS. What you write must be in your own words, and cited to a reliable source - Arjayay (talk) 12:04, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

wikipedia app & saved pages

[edit source]

It would be really nice to be able to add tags to saved pages. When doing research, I may save several dozen pages in several disciplines. Without a tag, it makes it difficult to review pages by subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.98.117.121 (talk) 13:42, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Requests for new features in the software aren't really on topic here: the Village pump is a better fit. I'm not sure quite what you mean by "saved pages"; but one thing you could do is, either on your user page, or on a sandbox (user sub-page) for the purpose, maintain a list of wikilinks to the pages you're interested in. You would need to edit your user page or subpage to add pages to the list, but you could categorise them any way you wanted. --ColinFine (talk) 17:49, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

I would like to update the page to read the below.

Please let me know how I can move forward with making this happen.

Edit summary

[edit source]

If you save a section, would /*Example*/ be counted as an edit saved with a summary? --Buffaboy talk 18:10, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Buffaboy: All that would indicate is that you edited the section called "Example". I wouldn't consider that adequate for having an edit summary, as it doesn't actually state what you changed. /*Example*/ Added information on event A. would be an example of a good summary. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:20, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

I noticed on TV that the founder of Wikipedia had two birthdays, his actual - August 7 I think, and August 8 - the date on his birth certificate, I thought I was the only one with that problem. Referencing errors on Replicant

[edit source]

Reference help requested. Hello. A few days ago I did a rather extensive edit to Replicant. ReferenceBot posted to my talk page that my edit may have introduced a citation error involving the | character, and could I go and "fix the errors highlighted". Reading the article, there are no highlighted errors. I do see that Citation Bot edited the article and changed a character in a citation from ":" to "=".

Is ReferenceBot complaining about the citation issue that has been fixed now by Citation Bot? If not, how can I easily see what ReferenceBot is complaining about, exactly? TIA - Tarcil (talk) 21:54, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, Tarcil (talk) 21:54, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

I have been working on the historic sites in Michigan. Some of the listings have separate pages and I would like to link them.
