History
[edit | edit source]The name "Parndon" means 'Hill growing with pear trees'.[2] Parndon was recorded in the Domesday Book as Perenduna/Perendinduna.[3] Little Parndon was in Harlow hundred.[4] In 1894 Little Parndon became part of Epping Rural District, on 1 April 1946 the parish was abolished and merged with Netteswell.[5] At the 1931 census (the last before the abolition of the parish), Little Parndon had a population of 128.[6] The parish had an exclave, the southerly part of the former parish became part of North Weald Bassett in 1946.[7] In 1955 Little Parndon became part of Harlow parish and Harlow Urban District. Little Parndon was a ward, in 1961 the ward had a population of 6012.[8] In 1974 Little Parndon became part of Harlow non-metropolitan district in the non-metropolitan county of Essex. No successor parish was created for the former urban district and so it became unparished.
