The Lighthouse Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse in Beaver Harbour, New Brunswick on Drews Head, as it was known, on the western side of the bay.[2]
History
[edit | edit source]The first lighthouse was inaugurated on 15 January 1876 and consisted of a white wooden quadrangular tower with balcony and red lantern attached to the keeper's house; the light was at 45 feet (14 m) of height above sea level and emitted a fixed white light.[3] In 1900 was activated a hand foghorn and in 1905 a seventh-order lens and lamp substituted the original lamp and reflectors; the new fixed white light was visible up to 10 nautical miles (19 km; 12 mi).[4] In 1915 a fourth-order lens was set up and in the 1960s a new metal square pyramidal skeletal tower was built to substitute the older.
The current lighthouse was erected in 1984 and consist of a 8 metres (26 ft) fiberglass cylindrical tower with balcony and lantern. The light is positioned at 14.5 metres (48 ft) above sea level and emits one white flash 3 seconds long in a 6 seconds period visible up to a distance of 12 nautical miles (22 km; 14 mi). The lighthouse is completely automated and managed by the Canadian Coast Guard with the identification code number CCG 83.[4]
