On 4 November 2022, Li was put under investigation for alleged "serious violations of discipline and laws" by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the party's internal disciplinary body, and the National Supervisory Commission, the highest anti-corruption agency of China.[2] Up to now, the three chairmen of the Huishang Bank, Dai Hedi (戴荷娣), Li Hongming and Wu Xuemin (吴学民), have all sacked for graft.[3]

On 27 April 2023, Li was expelled from the CCP.[4] On May 23, he was arrested by the Anhui Provincial People's Procuratorate.[5]

On 24 May 2024, Li was sentenced to 14 years and 6 months and fined 4 million yuan for taking bribes and abuse of power by Huaibei Intermediate People's Court.[6] All property gained from the bribery would be turned over to the national treasury.[6]
