Kaputu Koho (Crow and Koel) (Sinhala: කපුටු කොහෝ), is a 2025 Sri Lankan Sinhalese musical drama film directed by Somaratne Dissanayake and produced by Renuka Balasuriya.[1][2] The film is an experimental venture that fusion of traditional Sri Lankan stage drama style and cinematic technology.[3][4] It stars Amandya Uthpali, Abhilashi Santhushki and Dilan Wickramasinghe with several child artists.[5] Popular singer Harshana Dissanayake also made his debut cinema acting with the film.[6]
Plot
[edit | edit source]Koel is a brood parasitic bird which lays eggs on the nest of crow. When the chicks are growing, the crows recognize that they are different and chase them away from the next. This storyline is focused in the film as a subtext of brotherhood, national unity and coexistence.[7] The film is full of folk music melodies and local dance patterns with a fusion of traditional stage drama style and cinematic techniques, including theatrical dialogues, singing and dancing.[5][3]

Production and release
[edit | edit source]The film marks 12th cinema direction by Dr. Somaratne Dissanayake.[5] He also made the screenplay and song lyrics.[3] Production manager and producer is his wife Renuka Balasuriya and assistant director is Chamara Selara. Cinematographer is Vishwa Balasuriya,[10][11] and editor is Ajith Ramanayake.[1] Vidura Abeydheera is the makeup artist, while Nirmani Fernando made the costumes. Art direction done by Janaka Prasada, color mixing by Ananda Bandara and sound mixing done by Sasika Ruwan Marasinghe.[5]
Music director is Professor Saman Panapitiya where Chandana Wickramasinghe made choreography.[12] Dilan Samarawickrama, Harshana Dissanayake, Lamika Lakmini, Amandya Uthpali, Chenitha Santhish, Landu Settinayake, Lakdam Layanitha, and the Siheli Thurya made background vocals for 26 songs including: Vannam, Shanthikarma, Pelkavi, Karaththa Kavi, Pathal Kavi in the Upcountry and Lowcountry singing styles.[5][3]
The film trailer was released to the media after a brief ceremony at the Mahaweli Center.[5] The film was released on 27 March 2025 in EAP Theatres.[1][3]
