Jacob Toppin (/ˈtɒpɪn/ TOP-in;[1] born May 8, 2000) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA), on a two-way contract with the College Park Skyhawks of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the Rhode Island Rams and the Kentucky Wildcats. He is the younger brother of professional basketball player Obi Toppin.
High school career
[edit | edit source]Toppin attended Ossining High School where he played basketball, football and volleyball. As a senior, he averaged 15.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, earning All-Selection honors. Toppin was not highly recruited but committed to play college basketball at Rhode Island.[2]
College career
[edit | edit source]Toppin averaged 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in bench role as a freshman at Rhode Island. He transferred to Kentucky after the season.[3] As a sophomore, he averaged 5.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.[4] Toppin averaged 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as a junior.[5] As a senior, he averaged 12.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Toppin declared for the 2023 NBA draft following the season, forgoing an additional year of eligibility.[6]
Professional career
[edit | edit source]New York / Westchester Knicks (2023–2025)
[edit | edit source]After going undrafted in the 2023 NBA draft, Toppin signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the New York Knicks on July 6, 2023[7] and on October 22, the Knicks converted his deal into two-way contract.[8]
On December 5, 2023, Toppin made his NBA debut for the Knicks in a 146–122 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.[9] On February 22, 2024, he signed a 10-day contract with New York[10] and on March 4, he signed another two-way contract with the Knicks.[11]
On August 14, 2024, Toppin signed another two-way deal with the Knicks.[12] On March 2, 2025, The Knicks waived Toppin.[13]
Atlanta Hawks (2025)
[edit | edit source]On March 4, 2025, Toppin signed a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks.[14] His only appearance for Atlanta came in the team's season finale against the Orlando Magic, in which he recorded 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
On July 10, 2025, Toppin re-signed with the Hawks on a new two-way contract.[15] He made five appearances for Atlanta, averaging 1.6 points, 0.2 rebounds, and 0.2 assists. On December 8, it was announced that Toppin would miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.[16]
