Henry Walsham How

Lua error in mw.title.lua at line 392: bad argument #2 to 'title.new' (unrecognized namespace name 'Portal'). The Ven Henry Walsham How[1] (born Whittington, Shropshire[2] 17 May 1856 – died Malvern Link 29 November 1923) was Archdeacon of Halifax[3] from 1917 until his death.[4]

The son of William Walsham How,[5][6] the inaugural Bishop of Wakefield,[7] he was educated at Marlborough College, Wadham College, Oxford[8] and Leeds Clergy School.[9] He was ordained deacon in 1879, and priest in 1880.[10]

After curacies in Stoke-on-Trent and Haughton;[11] How held incumbencies in Mirfield[12] and Meltham.[13] He was Rural Dean of Huddersfield[14] from 1905 to 1917 and a Canon of Wakefield Cathedral from 1917 to 1923.[15]

Family

On 4 August 1886 How married Katharine Hutchinson, daughter of the Rev. William Hutchinson, vicar of Blurton.[16][17] The couple had three sons and one daughter.[18] The sons were:[19]

  • William Henry Walsham How (born 1887), cleric
  • Douglas Walsham How (1889–1942), official in Basutoland[20]
  • Robert Walsham How (born 1891)

Their daughter Rachel Walsham How (born 1887) married in 1915 the Rev. William Prescott-Decie (1867–1927).[21][22]
