The Wikipedia Purchase System, founded by Johnathan Secret, is the current system used for the purchase of Wikipedia. Per request of their lawyers, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger asked Secret to create the system. The system has been under supervision by the Wikipedia Purchase Management team since 2005.[1]

Early history

[edit source]

Founded in 2002,[2] the Wikipedia Purchase System was created with the sole purpose of allowing people to purchase the website. The System included the Secret handshake at time of release, but it was an older version where the buyer needed to bond with the person they were greeting about their favorite episode of Full House. The Raphael Option as well as the Party Life Option had not yet been introduced.[citation not needed]

"People ask me why I created the purchase system all the time, and honestly, I think there are many reasons. If I had to pick a #1 reason, I would say it's mainly because I wasn't sure that I was the person that deserved Wikipedia. If I couldn't maintain Nupedia, then who's to say I can maintain Wikipedia?"

— Jimbo Wales, [3]
