Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description This image shows the opening state of a game of Pax Imperia played within the Basilisk II emulator. The screen has been set to 640x480, emulating the size of a contemporary Mac II with a color screen.

The main portion of the screen is taken up by the Universe window, showing a portion of the stars selected in the initial setup screens. The player's home star is Cygnus, which can be identified with the crown.

Double clicking on the stars, if explored, opens a smaller Star window showing the solar system. Double clicking any of the planets within opens the Planet window showing the planets and its moons.

In the Beginner skill level, the players each start with three spaceships, organized into three fleets. This accounts for the slightly "blurry" text for the names, they are overlapped in space. Holding down the mouse button on a fleet allows it to be selected (with a pop-up if there is more than one in under the mouse) and then sent to another point on the map by double clicking.
