Yusha Araf is a Bangladeshi biomedical researcher and doctoral candidate at the University of Auckland whose work spans infectious-disease genomics, immuno-/bioinformatics and public-health-oriented biomedicine.[2][3] He co-authored a widely cited review on the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in the Journal of Medical Virology (2022).[1]

Early life and education

[edit | edit source]

Media reports indicate that Araf completed a BSc in Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and then an MS in Biotechnology at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).[4] He is undertaking PhD research in Biomedical Science at the Liggins Institute, University of Auckland.[2]

Research

[edit | edit source]

Araf’s research spans infectious-disease genomics, immuno-/bioinformatics and translational biomedicine.[4] His 2022 review on the Omicron variant has been widely cited. He also co-authored a methods-oriented piece on de novo assembly of SARS-CoV-2 genomes (Briefings in Bioinformatics, 2021).[5] Additional publications include work in regenerative medicine and bioprinting approaches (Regenerative Therapy, 2021).[6]

His doctoral work at the Liggins Institute focuses on long-read genomics and epigenetics in early-life nutrition and health outcomes, bridging wet-lab and computational pipelines.[7][8]

Biosecurity and science diplomacy

[edit | edit source]

In late 2022 Araf took part in youth-engagement activities around the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) review process in Geneva via the iGEM Foundation Delegates Program. The youth team submitted recommendations advancing synthetic-biology literacy and biosecurity awareness.[9][10][11]

Recognition

[edit | edit source]

Bangladeshi media highlight Araf’s research output and global engagement, including mention in a Stanford–Elsevier bibliometric list of highly cited scientists and his doctoral move to New Zealand.[4] A profile on BVNews24 also discussed his early-career impact in Bangladesh.[12]

Personal life

A 2025 profile of microbiologist Marjana Akter in The Business Standard identifies Araf as her husband and mentions their daughter.[13]
