"Super Far" is a song by American pop rock band LANY. It was released on June 28, 2017, as the third single from their self-titled debut studio album, which came out the same year. The song was written by Paul Klein and OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder.
Background
[edit | edit source]The writing process for "Super Far" began with a chance encounter between Paul Klein and Ryan Tedder at a private show in New York's Soho House near the end of 2015. Klein, who had just met Sam Smith at the event, approached Tedder due to their shared connection. This bond led Tedder to express interest in working together, but Klein intentionally delayed the co-write for about a year and a half to ensure they could focus on the project without the pressure of needing a song for the album. When they finally met, Tedder concentrated on the chord progression and melody, allowing Klein to complete the lyrics himself before finishing the song's production in Nashville with his bandmate Jake Goss.[1]
Content
[edit | edit source]The band stated that "Super Far" is about the emotional pain of a relationship where two people are physically present but emotionally distant from each other. The core lyrical theme is the feeling of "waking up to nothing when you're super far from home" and begging for affection from a partner who is unresponsive, emphasizing the relationship's broken state.[2]
Music video
[edit | edit source]Jake, Les, and I flew back from tour and immediately went into 2 6-hour days of dance rehearsals then shot the music video the next day. it was hilarious and fun and pretty exhausting, but i’m really proud of us and proud of what we made. listen.[3]
The official music video for "Super Far" was released on September 12, 2017. The video was directed by Isaac Ravishankara.[4] It features the three band members Paul Klein, Jake Goss, and Les Priest performing synchronized choreography against a brightly lit, continuously shifting backdrop.[3]
Prior to the official release, an "unofficial" video was also released on August 25, 2017, chronicling the band recent tour experience.[4]
Reception
[edit | edit source]The music video was described by Acid Stag noted that the visual utilized "simple choreographed dance moves" and that it "is as stunning as the track itself."[5]
