Stepan Sigetiy (March 5 1926 – January 3 2014) was a Ukrainian painter and member of the Transcarpathian painting school.

Biography

igetiy was born on March 5, 1926 in the village of Oleshnyk, Vynogradiv, Ukraine. He died on January 3, 2014 in Uzhhorod, Ukraine.[1]

Paintings

Sigetiy studied under painters Adalbert Erdely, Anton Kashshay, and Zoltan Sholtes.[2] He was the first Transcarpathian artist to paint the wooden churches of Transcarpathia as a series to record their unique cultural and sacred heritage, painting over 100 churches and landscapes during his career.[1][3]

He depicted more than 60 different wooden churches, most notably a 1986 painting of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Kryva.[1][4][5] Unique beauty of sacred architecture, wild landscapes, optimistic moods, and positive emotions are features of his paintings.[1]

Beginning in 1979, Sigetiy exhibitied in Ukraine, Armenia, Slovakia, Hungary, and the United States of America. His personal exhibitions were in Uzhhorod in 1990 and 1996 under the title "Monuments of wooden architecture of Transcarpathia of the XIV-XVII centuries and landscapes". In 2001, dedicated to his 75th birthday, he provide exhibition "Road to the Temple". For his 80th birthday, he provide exhibition "Golden Crosses in Blue Skies".[1][6]

Awards

Sigetiy was awarded in 1981 with the title of Honored Worker of Culture of the Ukraine. He was also awarded in 1999 with a degree by the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III of Ukraine. In 2009, he was awarded by a bishop with a letter "as an expression of gratitude for the preservation of the cultural heritage of our region under the Carpathians".[6]
