This article is about the American glass and architectural artist.
Scott Parsons is an American artist recognized for large-scale public art installations in stained glass, mosaic, and terrazzo.[1] Based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he has completed public art commissions across the United States and Canada, including projects at airports,[2] universities,[3] and churches.[4] His work has received significant critical attention in leading periodicals, including Public Art Review,[5] Art in America,[6] Architectural Record,[7] and Stained Glass.[8]
Early life and education
[edit | edit source]Parsons earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana University in South Dakota and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder.[9] He has collaborated with German studios including Derix Glasstudios, Glashütte Lamberts, and Franz Mayer of Munich, which list him among artists who have worked with their workshops.[10][11][12] Parsons received his first major commission in 1992 for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum at Augustana University.[13] His work emphasizes site-specific, contextual design.[14]
Artistic style and themes
[edit | edit source]According to Faith & Form, Parsons’ work combines digital processes with traditional methods of glass painting.[15] Denver Catholic described his stained-glass designs as abstract and noted their use of layered symbolism.[16] Recurring themes in his work include memory, community, and belonging.[14] Sacred Places magazine describes Parsons’ mosaics as containing “swirling fields of color ... interweaving fragments of gestural color and deep contrast [that] signify the paschal mystery of death and new life.”[17]
Periodical Articles and Reviews
[edit | edit source]Writing in Art Papers, Joe Miller describes Scott Parsons’ work as "rare in postmodernism: a multicultural allegory that's compelling, authentic and sincere."[18] Created for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in cooperation with members of the Oglala Lakota nation, Deborah Karasov writes in Public Art Review about the role of public art in creating a more responsible sense of place with Parsons' Reconciliation Project (1992)[19] In Stained Glass, Kenneth von Roenn writes that Parsons' work is "unique and original," "complex and novel," "not derived from a stained glass tradition."[20] In Lure of the Local, Lucy Lippard describes Parsons work in the context of a counter-memorial "combining visual poetry and harsh fact."[13]
Significant Critical Attention
[edit | edit source]Parsons has received seven CODAAward nominations and six Faith & Form Awards for religious art and architecture, including projects at Gloria Dei (2014), Our Lady of Loreto – Angels (2014), Saint Michael’s mosaics (2015), Our Lady of Loreto – Rosary (2016), Our Lady of the Angels (2018), and Saint Michael’s (2022).m.[21][22][23][24][25][26] According to press releases, these awards were presented by Faith & Form in partnership with the American Institute of Architects.
