- File:Symbol opinion vote.svg Comment: I've trimmed the article to address most of the tone issues. There seems to be borderline sig cov in the Offshore magazine and National Fisherman sources. MmeMaigret (talk) 12:44, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- File:Symbol opinion vote.svg Comment: I am not sure I share the same sediment about notability. For a company, the relevant guideline on sourcing is WP:ORGCRIT. What I see here is churnalism, routine coverage, announcements, or otherwise unreliable sources (a lot of trade publications). Can submitter point out the WP:THREE that would meet ORGCRIT? - File:Symbol opinion vote.svg Comment: I'm pretty sure the company is notable. But the article still reads a bit like a product catalogue. There is too much detail about each product and this seems written for potential buyers rather than for, say, a 10th grader in Bergen who really wants to work in ocean technology and wants to know more about it and has heard of Scantrol but doesn't really know what they do. That kid would not be able to read the article as currently written. Or think about a journalist for a mainstream newspaper who doesn't understand the technology but has heard that there is interesting stuff going on with subsea tech and came across the company name and is wondering whether it would be possible to do a feature story that is both about tech companies and has human interest. Or the potential employee, a brilliant young scientist, just wanting to know a bit more than the corporate website says. Or a 17-year-old who is writing a school essay about how AI is used in fishing. Or the tech journalist who is writing a story about wartime attacks on subsea cables and wonders whether non-military subsea tech might be relevant. I'm not saying you should write ABOUT all these things in the article (unless you can find reliable, independent sources and so on) but think about these people as potential readers of your article. Could you revise the article so any of these people could read it? I deleted a bit of the description of one of the products because it just went on and on. Maybe some can go back but please do consider the broad audience of the Wikipedia. I think it'll do both your company and all our readers more good! Other details: The added source from Finansavisen appears to say something a bit different from your bit about the great finances, but I didn't spend a lot of time looking at this, so it's fine if you want to revise this, but do understand that Wikipedia articles will tend to grow in ways that your employer may not want, and that criticism and negative press and controversies need to be included. I couldn't find anything more controversial or critical than the lower than hoped profits during covid though. Also, it's not clear to me whether Scantrol Deep Vision is a separate entity or not. If they belong in the same article perhaps the fish identification tech should also be mentioned more in the lede? Lijil (talk) 10:57, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

Scantrol AS is a Norwegian company that manufactures products and systems for marine, offshore, fisheries, and subsea operations.[1]
Its products include auto-trawling systems, systems that keep heavy machinery steady by counteracting ship movement, unmanned vessels, and AI-based camera systems to identify and measure fish in net. The company is headquartered in Bergen, Norway and its products are used on over 1000 vessels around the world.[1][2][3]
History
[edit | edit source]Scantrol AS was founded on 28 October 1987 in Norway.[4] Its first product line was auto-trawling systems for commercial fishing.[5] It later expanded into active heave compensation (AHC) systems to counteract vessel movement to keep machinery steady at sea.[6] The company's products had been installed on over 1,250 vessels as at 2004,[2][3] most outside Norway.[1]
The company is headquartered in Bergen, Norway.[1][4] In 2025, it employed about 22 people.
Products and technology
[edit | edit source]Autotrawl systems
[edit | edit source]Scantrol's autotrawl systems are used in the fishing industry to keep trawl openings symmetrical by employee sensors on the nets.[5] As at 2024, more than 600 of it autotrawl systems had been installed worldwide.[5]
Active heave compensation
[edit | edit source]The company's products include active heave compensation (AHC) systems for offshore winches, cranes, launch and recovery systems and cylinders.[5] The AHC systems compensate for vessel movement during underwater operations.[6][7][8][9]
Unmanned surface vessels (USVs)
[edit | edit source]In the early 2020s, the company branched out into launch and recovery control systems for unmanned surface vessels. USVs consume less fuel and emit less CO2 compared with traditional vessels.[10][11][12]
Deep Vision
[edit | edit source]In 2013, Scantrol started developing subsea camera systems for real-time fish identification, which allow fish to be identified and measured inside trawl nets. The system uses LED lighting to light up and photograph fish, which are then analyzed to determine species, size, depth, and position.[13][14][15] The technology was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research and SINTEF. The company also received support from the Research Council of Norway.[14]
A 2022 study conducted off Jeju Island, South Korea, found that the system identified over 86% of fish species caught in mid-water trawls.[15] The system aids sustainable fishing practices by allowing fish to be sorted and for bycatch to be released.[13]
The system is now operated by Scantrol's subsidiary, Scantrol Deep Vision.[13][14]
Financial performance
[edit | edit source]Bergens Tidende reported that, in 2023, Scantrol had operating revenues of NOK 44.5 million, with operating profit of NOK 8.7 million and pre-tax profit of NOK 8.9 million.[16] The company was ranked as the seventh largest in its sector in Bergen and Vestland.[16]
Awards
[edit | edit source]In 2016, the company received the Innovation Award at the Nor-Fishing exhibition.[14]
