Project Ekam is an Indian strategic initiative funded by the Ministry of Defence, and developed by an Indian startup Neuralix.ai, with the objective to provide and arm the Indian Armed Forces with domestic AI related technologies. The primary goal is to offer total control over data security, providing specialized solutions, and creating operational doctrines using military data sets. The project has created an AI-as-a-Service (ALAAS) platform and architecture for hosting and deploying air-gapped, open-source, domestic small and large language models with Al apps.[1][2][3][4]

The AI framework was created specifically for the Indian defense sector. It will safely store India's operational logic, models, and defense data. Project Ekam will guarantee that Indian commanders and soldiers can rely on AI systems that can comprehend Indian military difficulties, speak in Indian languages, and support Indian military decision-making in real time.[5]

History

Project Ekam is a multi-phase program funded by the Ministry of Defence's Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) framework, which was established in 2022 to promote technological advancement and innovation in the Indian defense and aerospace industries through the Defence Innovation Organization. Neuralix.ai, a Karnataka-based firm, is developing it as part of the iDEX ADITI 2.0 challenge.[6][7][8] Following a successful demonstration, the Ministry of Defense awarded financing for the project in 2024. In order to evaluate results according to their requirements, the Indian military has trained the LLM in its own language, forms, and jargon. The platform can host a variety of open-source and indigenous AI models within the Army Data Network, and it supports classified datasets, military terminology, and operational doctrines.[9]

Jigyasa (Generative pre-trained transformer with Retrieval-augmented generation pattern), Darpan (document analyzer), Manthan (document-specific agents), Lipik (correspondence generator), Rachna (PPT generator), Saar (summarizer), Anuvadak (translation), Vaachak (text-to-speech), Lekhak (speech-to-text), optical character recognition and PDF tools are few of the advanced AI services provided by Ekam. It is anticipated that these technologies will enhance multilingual communication between formations, staff work, and analysis. To improve data security, independence, and defense against outside threats, Ekam is creating the first large language model in India for the Indian Army. The project is positioned as a significant advancement in the development of military-grade AI autonomy.[3][8]

It was launched by Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh in 2025 at the Chanakya Defense Dialogue held at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi.[1][4] Without depending on foreign software or external cloud systems, the platform guarantees data sovereignty and enables Indian military personnel at different levels to employ AI-enabled capabilities.[10] Project Ekam is an important aspect of India's evolving AI-First Defense Strategy. Project Ekam offers total data control via air-gapped servers and sovereign clouds. To increase commanders' accuracy, the LLMs will receive training on classified military doctrine.[9][11]

Usage

Applications like as command support, document intelligence, speech interface, translation engine, operational analytics, international cloud services, internet connectivity, data integration, etc. would benefit from the domestic LLM for defense operations.[4] Project Ekam's user-friendly design enables military staff at all levels to utilize AI-enabled assistance without the need for specific technical knowledge.[12]

The LLM is capable of analyzing vast amounts of data, deciphering challenging linguistic tasks, and providing users with intelligent, useful answers.[13] Through its participation in the Surya Drishti initiative, which aims to improve border surveillance and decision-making through AI and data-driven systems, it is advancing the situational awareness capabilities of the Indian Army. It includes improvements to the Army's capacity to monitor construction activity close to border areas, track movement, and instantly combine data from various sources.[14]

By combining data from operational records, weather reports, and surveillance equipment, Project Ekam gives Army personnel a better understanding of the situation on the ground, allowing them to make decisions during operations more quickly and intelligently. It helps commanders anticipate and handle security issues by supporting patrol planning and risk modeling. The system's design enables it to be expanded or modified over time as operational requirements change, and it was designed to function within the Army's current IT infrastructure.[14] The system will examine data from sensors and satellites to identify trends and insights that a soldier would overlook.[15]
