Early history

Price Bailey was founded on 2 April 1938,[8] when Leslie Benten established L.H. Benten & Co. in Bishop's Stortford. In 1943, Stanley Price joined the firm, becoming a partner in 1947. Reginald Bailey was appointed a partner in 1950, and the firm was renamed Benten, Price and Bailey. Following Leslie Benten's departure in 1956, the firm was renamed Price Bailey and Partners.[9]

The firm expanded its regional presence, establishing offices in Cambridge (1956), Saffron Walden, and Ramsey. The Stortford, Harlow, and Cambridge practices formally amalgamated in 1960. By the late 1960s, new offices were opened in Great Dunmow and Chingford, London.

The early 1980s the firm acquired Graver, Madders & Co. in 1982 to establish a presence in Norwich. Founders Stanley Price and Reginald Bailey retired that same year. New offices were opened in Newmarket and Saffron Walden in 1986, followed by an office in Ely in 1989.

The 1990s onward saw strategic growth and diversification,[10] establishing specialist units in corporate finance, small business, and personal tax. By 1999, the firm's national ranking had risen to 42nd.

In the 2000 s Price Bailey acquired Stephenson Davies (2002) and converted to a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) in 2004. Expansion[11][12] into London began in 2007 with offices in the City and Baker Street. A Guernsey office was also opened to support local and international clients.

By 2010, Price Bailey employed 225 staff and 23 partners.[13] In 2019, the firm's Guernsey operations were acquired by Grant Thornton Channel Islands. Price Bailey subsequently expanded its international footprint by opening an office in Dubai in 2020.

Recent history

[edit | edit source]

In 2023, Price Bailey acquired Stephenson Smart and Co, establishing a presence in Peterborough. This was followed in 2025 by the acquisition of Oliver Clive + Co, which added a third London location on Baker Street. As of 2025, the firm is ranked within the UK's top 40 accountancy practices and is governed by an elected Board of Directors.[14]

Operations and Structure

[edit | edit source]

Price Bailey is owned and managed by its partners and operates as a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP),[24] a structure it adopted in early 2004. This conversion was designed to protect the LLP members from the firm's debts, a standard practice among accountancy firms.

The firm remains an independent entity and is the brand name for Price Bailey Group Limited and its subsidiary companies and limited liability partnerships, which operate both inside and outside the UK. The principal firm is Price Bailey LLP (registered in England & Wales, number OC307551[24][25]), with Price Bailey Limited (registered in Guernsey) and Price Bailey Mayfair LLP also being part of the group.

Following its conversion to an LLP in June 2004, Price Bailey established a democratically elected Board of Management to run the firm. Peter Gillman was elected as the first Managing Director[26] for a three-year term. In 2013 Martin Clapson[27] took on the role of Managing Director.[28] Martin Clapson also serves as the Chairman of the European Board of the International Association of Professional Accountants (IAPA).[29]

Price Bailey operates an Employee Share Scheme. After an employee completes 12 months of continuous service with the firm, they are eligible to join the Price Bailey All Employee Share Scheme[30] and receive 25,000 employee shares in Price Bailey Group Ltd, the group's holding company.
