Power Integrations, Inc. is a publicly traded semiconductor company (NASDAQ: POWI) headquartered in San Jose, California. Founded in 1988, the company specializes in high-voltage integrated circuits used in power conversion for a wide range of applications, including consumer electronics, industrial systems, and renewable energy.[1]

History

[edit | edit source]

In the late 1990s, Power Integrations introduced EcoSmart and TinySwitch chips, which helped reduce standby power consumption in electronic devices.[2] These technologies enabled manufacturers to cut energy leakage by up to 95%[3], contributing to an estimated 11.5 TWh of electricity savings annually.[4]

In 2001, then CEO Balu Balakrishnan demonstrated the technology to President George W. Bush, influencing the adoption of the one-watt standby standard for Energy Star certification and prompting an executive order on energy-efficient federal purchases.[5][6][7][8][9]

The company estimates its components have been used in over 20 billion devices and have saved approximately $10 billion in electricity. It has also advocated for regulatory standards promoting efficient power supplies.[10][11]

Gallium Nitride (GaN) Technology

[edit | edit source]

Power Integrations is active in gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor development and holds several patents in the GaN-on-sapphire domain.[12] It has contributed to monolithic integration in power electronics.[13] In 2024, the company introduced a 1700 V GaN transistor integrated into its InnoMux converter ICs for industrial use.[14][15][16][17][18][19] Its GaN-based products emphasize reliability and are deployed across multiple high-volume product families.[20]

In 2025, the company began working with NVIDIA on building the 800 VDC AI data center ecosystem.[21][22]

Financial Performance

[edit | edit source]

In 2019, the company exceeded earnings expectations and secured supply contracts with major cell phone manufacturers.[23][24] After a downturn, it rebounded in late 2019 and early 2020, driven by demand for fast chargers and appliance power solutions.[25] In 2022, it faced challenges from weak Chinese smartphone demand but continued investing in automotive and GaN technologies.[26]

Longtime CEO Balu Balakrishnan retired in 2025 after more than 20 years, holding over 200 patents.[27][28][29] He was succeeded by Jennifer Lloyd, a former Analog Devices executive noted for her leadership in billion-dollar business units.[30]
