Pandit Lala Ram Bajpai (1909–2008) was a prominent freedom fighter, politician, and social worker from the Bundelkhand region.[1] He served as the Prime Minister of Orchha State,[2] Home Minister of Vindhya Pradesh,[3] Member of the Legislative Assembly of Vindhya Pradesh,[2] and founder of Niwari College. His name appears in multiple spellings in English and Hindi: Bajpai / Vajpayee and बाजपेई / वाजपेयी.

Early life

Lala Ram Bajpai was born in 1909 on Akshay Tritiya in Binwara village, Orchha, Tikamgarh district, Madhya Pradesh, in a modest Brahmin family.[1]

Role in Independence Movement

Bajpai actively opposed British colonial rule, raising the Indian tricolor in public events and organizing local protests.[3] He led a procession in Thouna village during Flag Satyagraha (1939), hoisting the tricolor on government buildings, resulting in police action and injuries among participants.[4]

He also organized protests against colonial forest policies along the Betwa River during Orchha Jungle Satyagraha (1930).[5]

He founded Niwari College in Niwari, Madhya Pradesh, and served as its lifelong president.

He is also documented in the book *Bundelkhand ka Svatantrata Sangarsha* (2020) by B.K. Shrivastava, which lists him among key freedom fighters of Bundelkhand.[2] Bajpai was recognized by the Government of India as a freedom fighter.[2] Institutions and memorials in Bundelkhand bear his name.[6] Annual tributes are paid on his birth anniversary.[1] He is also documented in the official Government of Madhya Pradesh – Freedom Fighters Register.[2]

Death

Pandit Lala Ram Bajpai passed away on 22 November 2008 at Nirmal Hospital, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.[4]
