Comment: Some of the claims/facts included in the article are not supported by what the sources actually say. This may be AI hallucinations, or may be original research. There is also WP:REFBOMBING occurring especially in the Press and reception section. Chose a small number of (like 3) to focus on rather than listing all these publications. Olympe Ramakrishna (born 2 February 1986, Lisieux, Normandy, France) is a Franco-Indian contemporary visual artist who divides her time between Bangalore, India, and Normandy, France. Her work encompasses painting, collage, textile art, embroidery, and art installations, focusing on feminine identity.[1] Drawing from both European and Indian artistic traditions, she combines sensory and material elements in her practice.[2] Her works have been exhibited in several Alliance Francaise across India as well as in cultural heritage venues in France, and have been featured in multiple publications in the Indian national and regional press, along with a few articles in the French regional press.
Early life and education
[edit | edit source]Olympe Thomas-Lamotte Ramakrishna was born on 2 February 1986 in Lisieux, Normandy, into a creative environment : her mother is a sculptor and her father works in fashion.[3] She developed her artistic skills through evening and summer life drawing classes at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and the Atelier Artmedium. She later continued her artistic exploration in London, with workshops at the Battersea Arts Centre.[4]
She also pursued legal studies with a master’s degree in law from the University of Caen and the professional qualification for the French notarial profession at the CFPN in Rennes. She later specialised in the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) at the workplace under Indian law. Her work focuses on intercultural dialogue, and gender equality.[5] Since 2023, she also serves as a French Foreign Trade Advisor (CCEF).[6]
Artistic practice
[edit | edit source]Her work has been described as drawing on both European and Indian artistic influences. Her influences include the Flemish Primitives, Ingres, Gauguin, Le Douanier Rousseau, Pierre-Joseph Redoute, as well as Mughal paintings, Company paintings, Raja Ravi Varma and Amrita Sher-Gil. Her work is often described as symbolic, particularly through her use of the sari and visual references that blend European and Indian traditions.[2] She also explores the fluidity and transparency of textile materials.[7] [8]
She is the president of the French art collective Heroines, which supports contemporary creation and women’s narratives across disciplines.[9]
Exhibitions
[edit | edit source]Olympe Ramakrishna's works have been presented in India, including at the Alliance Française of Delhi,[10][1] Bangalore,[11] Ahmedabad,[12] Chandigarh,[13] and Hyderabad.[14] [15] It has also been shown at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Swasti Art Gallery (HCG Foundation), and in private galleries in Pondicherry[13] and Bangalore.[16]
Her work was also shown in France at the Church of Vieux Saint-Sauveur de Caen,[17] and at the Château de Fontaine-Henry, in Normandy, during an exhibition dedicated to Mathilde de Flandres.[18]
Among her major projects are the large-scale textile and installation work Women of Urban India (also known as Women of Bangalore) and Mathilde de Flandres.[19]
Several articles have noted her recurring focus on female identity and her use of textile and embroidery within contemporary visual narratives.[20] [3]
