The Missouri State Old Time Fiddlers Association (MSOTFA) is a non-profit organization consisting of Missouri-based old-time fiddlers.[1] The group prides itself in having members of all ages and varying backgrounds to preserve and celebrate the history of Missouri music.

History

[edit | edit source]

Originated in 1979, its founding members include Charlie Walden, Chris Germain, Bill Shull, Spencer Galloway, and Bob Hagan.[2] In 1989, the MSOTFA received the prestigious Missouri Arts Award for their achievements in maintaining, encouraging, and celebrating folk music from Missouri through educational outreach and oral histories. One of their initiatives included the Midwest Fiddle Invitational Contest, broadcast by KOPN radio station in 2025 after being defunct for 36 years.[3] Many members also perform regular old-time jams, including the monthly jam lead by Howard Wright Marshall at the University of Missouri.[4] In an interview with the Missouri Folk Arts Program, Howard explained the importance of community music making, where all participating performers get a turn at leading a tune, regardless of their age or ability. [5] MSOTFA has released over one hundred recordings of local folk tunes on Bandcamp, from albums to contest performances going all the way back to the 1970s, showing their dedication to archiving Missouri fiddling.[6] They also host an annual fiddle contest for others to gather and share music.[1]
