The Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society (MCLS) is an international academic society focusing on research in mathematical cognition and learning. It supports collaboration among researchers in psychology, education, and neuroscience and is affiliated with the open-access Journal of Numerical Cognition.[1][2]
History
[edit | edit source]The conception of MCLS dates to 2013, when the NICHD awarded a five-year conference grant to Dan Berch (University of Virginia) and Dave Geary (University of Missouri). During planning, NICHD programme officers encouraged Berch to consider establishing a scientific society for mathematical cognition, similar to the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading.[3]
Berch, together with a steering committee including Dave Geary, Kathy Mann Koepke, Daniel Ansari, Lynn Fuchs, Michele Mazzocco, and Stephen Petrill, drafted bylaws, a provisional structure, and potential board membership. Around the same time, Wim Fias, Roi Cohen Kadosh, and Avishai Henik—who had been considering forming a regional society—joined discussions, as did John Towse, founding editor of the Journal of Numerical Cognition.[3]

In May 2016, Journal of Numerical Cognition (JNC) became the official journal of the society, following approval by the Governing Board and PsychOpen.[3]
Launch of the MCLS website in July 2016.[3]
The first MCLS conference was held in Oxford in 2018.[4]
Mission, vision, and values
[edit | edit source]MCLS’s mission is “to advance the interdisciplinary scientific investigation of mathematical cognition and learning across countries, cultures, and communities, to disseminate the resultant knowledge, and to promote its application globally for improving the learning of mathematics and enriching its development.”[5]
Its vision highlights international collaboration, open science, and equitable participation, with particular emphasis on supporting early-career researchers. Core values include interdisciplinarity, international engagement, open research practices (e.g., data sharing and preregistration), and mentorship.[6]
Governance
[edit | edit source]MCLS is overseen by a Governing Board composed of scholars in mathematical cognition, education, and related disciplines.[7] Officers include roles such as Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership Coordinators. Early board members included Dan Berch, Wim Fias, Roi Cohen Kadosh, Avishai Henik, Mark Ashcraft, Elizabeth Brannon, Ed Hubbard, Bob Reeve, and Xinlin Zhou.[3]
Journal
[edit | edit source]The Journal of Numerical Cognition (JNC) is the official journal of MCLS.[8] It is a free, open-access, peer-reviewed journal published by PsychOpen.[9]
Conferences and activities
[edit | edit source]MCLS organises international conferences to bring together researchers in mathematical cognition and learning. The first meeting took place in Oxford in 2018.[10]
In 2024, the MCLS convention in Washington, D.C., hosted at Gallaudet University, was highlighted for making accessibility a central focus. Coverage by the National Science Foundation reported that the NSF-funded meeting provided American Sign Language and deafblind interpreters, low-stimulation rooms, and live captioning to ensure inclusive participation.[11] University news coverage also notes participation at the 2024 convention, including posters on NSF-funded projects.[12] Earlier items record presentations at the MCLS conference in 2023.[13]
Subsequent conferences have been hosted internationally, including the 2025 meeting in Hong Kong.[14][15]
