LifeWatch ERIC is a distributed European research infrastructure designed to support biodiversity and ecosystem research through digital services, virtual research environments and interoperable data resources.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]The concept of LifeWatch was first included in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap in 2006.[2] A preparatory phase was carried out between 2008 and 2010, followed by a transition period until 2017. LifeWatch was formally established as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) on 17 March 2017 under EU law.[3]
Organisation and Membership
[edit | edit source]The Statutory Seat and ICT technical offices are located in Seville, Spain.[4]
LifeWatch ERIC operates through several Common Facilities:
- Spain – Statutory Seat and ICT Core
- Italy – Service Centre
- The Netherlands – Virtual Laboratories & Innovations Centre (VLIC)[5]
Member States contribute through national nodes known as “Distributed Centres”. As of 2024, the Member States include Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.[6]
Mission and Services
[edit | edit source]LifeWatch ERIC provides digital tools and data-access services to support biodiversity and ecosystem research. Its activities include:
- Access to biodiversity and ecosystem data, services and workflows.[7]
- Virtual Research Environments (VREs) for data processing, modelling and visualisation.[8]
- Support for the application of the FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).[9]
Legal and Financial Framework
[edit | edit source]LifeWatch ERIC was created under the legal framework for European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERIC), established by Council Regulation (EC) No. 723/2009.[3] Funding derives primarily from Member State contributions, both financial and in-kind, and is supplemented by European and national research projects.[10]
Impact and Applications
[edit | edit source]LifeWatch ERIC resources are used in biodiversity monitoring, ecosystem assessment and environmental research. The infrastructure supports studies addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem services and sustainable resource management.[11] It also provides tools and workflows for modelling and analysis using large-scale datasets and computational methods.[12]
Challenges and Outlook
[edit | edit source]- Technical: integration of diverse environmental datasets, maintaining interoperability and FAIR compliance, and continued development of analytical tools.
- Financial: ensuring long-term sustainability of funding across Member States.
- Geographic: potential expansion to new Members and increased collaboration beyond the EU.
- Societal: broader engagement with sectors such as environmental management, policy, and citizen-oriented initiatives.[5]
