Joshua Leitch Bonkowsky, MD, PhD, is a pediatric neurologist at the University of Utah School of Medicine.[1][2] He is the Division Chief for Pediatric Neurology in the Department of Pediatrics and is the Director of the Primary Children's Center for Personalized Medicine.[3] His work focuses on understanding the genetic basis for childhood diseases and developing gene-based treatments. He has a particular focus on neurologic diseases such as leukodystrophies.[4][5]
Career and research
[edit | edit source]Bonkowsky is a co-founder of ALD Connect, a non-profit organization focused on improving health outcomes for patients with adrenoleukodystrophy.[6][7] As part of his role at the Center for Personalized Medicine, Bonkowsky and his colleagues are seeking to foster equitable access to pediatric genomics through innovative care models and technologies.[8] Bonkowsky’s laboratory studies animal models of neurologic disease, particularly those that affect the white matter, such as vanishing white matter disease and adrenoleukodystrophy.[9]
