Comment: Most of these sources are unreliable and not sources like those covered in WP:VG/S. The sources that are, like PocketGamer and TouchArcade, are what we'd call WP:ROUTINE coverage - they're just reporting forward the press release of the game and that it's coming out soon. Just not enough here for notability, and really needs to omit unreliable reviews. VRXCES (talk) 21:54, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
Comment: More significant coverage of the game (usually it's reviews) are needed for a WP:GNG pass. Jovanmilic97 (talk) 00:24, 16 December 2025 (UTC)

Influent is a commercial language learning video game developed by Rob Howland and published by Three Flip Studios. It was first released for PC in 2014[1] and later arrived on iOS[2] and Android[3]. The game focuses on vocabulary acquisition through exploration of a 3D environment, where players interact with household objects, furniture, and items to hear and learn their names in their target language. Influent supports more than twenty languages through downloadable language packs.[4]
Gameplay
[edit | edit source]Influent is designed around a 3D apartment game environment that contains hundreds of selectable objects. Players move through the rooms and can select items to hear audio pronunciations from actual native speakers, view spelling in multiple alphabets, and add words to study lists. The game incorporates a variety of timed challenges and vocabulary review modes. Rather than teaching grammar or conversation, Influent concentrates on building practical vocabulary through repeated and contextual exposure. Several reviewers have described its approach as an immersive or exploratory style of language learning.[5][6]
Development
[edit | edit source]The project prototype originated as part of a research program conducted by Robert Howland at the University of Tsukuba in Tsukuba, Japan after receiving the Monbukagakushō Scholarship from the Japanese Government. Howland published two research papers along with Prof. Junichi Hoshino on Computer-assisted Language Learning using the game's prototype as a basis for the effectiveness of games-based learning in a visual-spatial learning environment.[7]
Release
[edit | edit source]After the research term, Howland launched a successful Kickstarter campaign and expanded the prototype into a full game, publishing it under the studio name, Three Flip Studios.[8] Influent was released on PC through Steam in 2014,[1] followed by versions for iOS in October, 2021[2] and Android in April, 2022.[3] Additional languages were added over time through collaboration with translators and native speakers.[4]
Reception
[edit | edit source]Influent has been covered by various gaming and education-focused outlets, with reviewers noting its unique approach to vocabulary acquisition using a number of gamification techniques. Critics have also noted the game's limited overall scope and lack of grammar instruction and basic phrases positioning it as a supplemental tool rather than a comprehensive learning program.
Hardcore Gamer reviewed the initial PC release, describing the title as a novel supplement to traditional study methods, while also noting its limited focus on vocabulary rather than grammar or conversation.[1] Yahoo News Singapore published a review of the game shortly after its initial release, describing its method of learning words through interaction with a fully navigable 3D environment and framing it as an accessible entry point for casual language learners.[9] GameGrin and GameSkinny published similar assessments, characterizing Influent as a useful auxiliary tool for learners but not a comprehensive replacement for formal instruction.[10][11]
Additional reviews appeared on outlets such as NoobFeed, The Geekly Grind, Gert Lush Gaming, and Crotchety Old Gamer, many of which emphasized the game’s immersive design and suitability as a secondary learning resource.[12][13][14][15]
Coverage of the mobile versions appeared in outlets including TouchArcade, Pocket Gamer, and The Gaming Outsider, with authors noting the game’s suitability for short, casual study sessions on mobile platforms.[2][3][16]
A notable editorial feature was also published by the Epic Games Store highlighting Influent's learning mechanics with the author stating "This method of learning is one of the best ways to master a language."[17]
Beyond individual reviews, Influent has also been featured in curated lists of useful resources for language learners, including the #1 spot on TheGamer’s list of the best language learning video games.[18]
Awards
[edit | edit source]Influent was selected as a finalist and ultimately received the Overall Winner Award at the 2025 Serious Games Showcase and Challenge Europe as well as the Ernie Romans Memorial Trophy for the level of fun involved in playing.[19] This led to Influent being selected as a finalist in the 2025 Serious Games Showcase and Challenge at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference.[20]
