History
[edit | edit source]Usually, early electrical home installations had only a couple of wall receptacles, and one could generally find only one per room. After the Second World War, the popularity of consumer electronics soared, and so did the demand for additional plugs. To solve this problem, some producers came up with a wall socket idea that could hold four plugs instead of two standard ones. [3]
Four plug installations marked the beginning of the post-war housing boom in America, when the United States was a seller’s market, and builders offered electrical features that were more convenient and attracted customers. Meanwhile, electrical codes had not been fully standardized yet, which permitted a much wider range of design variations than those in existence now. [4]
Design
[edit | edit source]A typical four-plug outlet of the 1950s consisted of two duplex units enclosed within a single wall plate. The designers most of the time had in common the following features: [5]
- Two stacked or side-by-side duplex configurations
- Two-prong ungrounded slots
- Non-polarized plug openings
- Faceplates made of bakelite or early plastics in neutral colors such as brown, black, or ivory
It is said that some of the variations may have had rare slot arrangements or manufacturer logos, depending on the company. [6]
Safety and electrical standards
[edit | edit source]They were designed before many modern electrical safety features. Most did not have a grounding conductor and were not polarized, which is the norm nowadays. Due to the possibility of multiple device connections at the same time, the risk of overloading the circuit was also higher, especially in houses with old wiring. [7]
Because of these shortcomings, four plug outlets are generally considered not to meet safety standards in current electrical codes and are thus removed during renovations. [8]
Decline
[edit | edit source]Standardized duplex outlets became standard residential construction practice by the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s. Moreover, the emphasis of electrical codes increasingly shifted toward grounding, polarization, and distributing more outlets throughout a room instead of higher-capacity single receptacles. [9]
Four plug outlets were eventually phased out, with manufacturers discontinuing them. The few surviving examples are rare and can only be found in old houses that have not been significantly electrically upgraded. [10]
Preservation
[edit | edit source]Four plug outlets in some mid-century homes that have been historically restored are kept for the sake of authenticity. There, they are mostly disconnected or internally replaced while the original outer shell is kept intact. [11]
