David Oscar Markus (born 1972) is a criminal defense trial and appellate attorney practicing in Miami, Florida and throughout the United States. He is the attorney for Ghislaine Maxwell.
Career
[edit | edit source]David Markus, a criminal defense lawyer whose whose career and representation style has been explored in several profiles in news magazines,[1][2][3] is the attorney for Ghislaine Maxwell, the friend and associate of Jeffrey Epstein who was convicted in 2021 on charges of sex trafficking.[4] Markus represented Maxwell[5] in her interactions with the Trump Administration regarding the so-called Epstein files.[6] He participated in the highly publicized two-day interview of Maxwell by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in July 2025[7] and corresponded on Maxwell's behalf with the House Oversight Committee regarding Maxwell's potential testimony.[8] Blanche had previously been interviewed on Markus's For The Defense podcast,[9] a legal podcast that interviews high profile attorneys and judges about their cases, leading to criticism by the New York Times and others that Markus and Blanche had a preexisting "cozy relationship."[10] Although Markus did not represent Maxwell in her 2021 trial, he was criticized by federal prosecutors for penning an op-ed column about the case during her trial.[11] The district court subsequently issued a gag order barring Markus and others associated with the case from speaking publicly about it.[12]
Markus was interviewed in Hulu's 2025 docuseries called "Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari," which explored the case of Larry Rudolph, a dentist convicted of murdering his wife during a big game hunting trip in Africa.[13] The third episode of the 3-part series includes several scenes in which Markus appears to discuss his representation of Rudolph at trial. [14] The case also was the subject of a lengthy Rolling Stone piece[15] and a 48 Hours special.[16] [17] [18] In 2019, Markus represented Charlie Adelson, who was charged with hiring a hit man to kill his brother-in-law Dan Markel,[19] a well-regarded Florida State University College of Law professor.[20] The case was the subject of Wondery’s season one podcast Over My Dead Body.
Published articles and speaking engagements
[edit | edit source]Markus has served a regular contributor to The Hill, authoring numerous opinion columns for the publication.[21][22] In addition, Markus has co-authored a column for Law.com on criminal defense issues.[23][24] He has written for other publications including USA Today[25] and the Miami Herald.[26]
Markus is frequently quoted by news publications including the Wall Street Journal as an expert on criminal defense issues in the United States, and appears on radio and television programs including CNN, Newsmax, and CNBC as a legal expert.[27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]
