David Semyonovich Burman (Russian: Давид Семёнович Бурман; born 13 November 1961) is a Russian-Israeli theatre director, producer and festival organiser. He is best known as the founder and long-time artistic director of the biennial KUKART International Arts Festival in Saint Petersburg, one of the first independent multidisciplinary arts festivals in post-Soviet Russia.[1][2]

Career

Burman trained as a puppet actor at Orenburg Musical College (graduated 1986) and later studied puppet-theatre directing and theatre management at the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts in Saint Petersburg (1990–1997).[3]

He worked as an actor and director at regional puppet theatres in Ukraine and Kazakhstan in the 1980s and early 1990s. From 2011 to 2012 he served as artistic director of the Kemerovo Regional Drama Theatre named after A.V. Lunacharsky.[3]

In 1993 Burman founded the KUKART International Arts Festival, initially in Tsarskoye Selo and subsequently in Saint Petersburg proper. The festival presents puppetry, contemporary theatre, dance, music and visual arts, and has featured participants from over 40 countries.[1][4]

Burman has served on juries and as an expert at numerous puppet and theatre festivals in Russia and abroad, and regularly conducts master classes and directing workshops.[3]

Burman holds dual Russian and Israeli citizenship and is based in Saint Petersburg.[3]
